Moving servers

I just wanted to make an announcement that zoklet.net will soon be moving hosts. I plan on making the change this week.

The new host will have several new features that were not available before. We will have a firewall with advanced ddos protection (yay!), we will be able to host "adult content" should we choose, we can host torrent trackers, and we can also host IRC servers and IRC bouncers. For those of you in the US, you will have much faster loading times as well (I get a latency of about 20ms - compared to our current 130ms).

To help pay for the new server I've considered several options:

1) Selling web space. I haven't come up with prices yet, but I'm thinking 5-10 dollars a month for hosting and/or subdomain leasing (yoursite.zoklet.net)

2) Selling email addresses. I haven't come up with prices for this either, probably 3-5 dollars monthly for an @zoklet.net email address.

3) Co-ownership. I'm leaning heavily towards this option at the moment. I have several trusted friends/moderators who said they would be willing to pay up to half of the bill for "equity" in the site - meaning they get a say in how things are run. DON'T PANIC! I don't intend on letting just anyone do this - only people who I've known for at least a few years and who I trust wholeheartedly. ie: You don't have to worry about driveby owning part of the site or anything...

4) New ads. I've talked to several folks about buying ad spots around the site. The problem we've had with ads before is that most commission ad places (like adsense, adbrite, commission junction, etc) do not like our content and close our contracts. This is why I plan on contacting these website owners individually instead of through a middle-man website.

5) Donations. They're always welcome :)

For those of you worried about down time... I am going to try and make the change as smooth as possible. Hopefully nobody will experience more than a few hours of down time. Here's my plan:

[nerdy stuff]After I sign up with the new host I will move all of the hard content over (all the php files, images, themes, html files (from zoklet.net/totse), the main page, etc.) to the new server. Then I will shut down the BBS on THIS server and copy the database to the new server (could take several hours). After the database copy is complete, I will change the DNS information to direct zoklet.net to the new server instead of the old. I must shut the bbs down during the database transfer so that we don't lose any posts that are made during the transfer.[/nerdy stuff]

You do know why Jeff shut down totse, right? Money. Totse was making more negative money than zoklet could even TRY for. I spoke to Jeff about it as he was shutting the site down - I asked if I could buy the site from him. He informed me that it was simply not worth it. Users never click ads, the affiliates that this sort of site attracts don't pay out, and the servers are VERY expensive. Not to mention the regular ddos attacks, law suits, and other legal fees.

There's no viable way to make money on a site like this outside of donations or entirely alienating the user base (popup ads, paying for accounts, etc). Clearly you think you could do a better job, but I think you fail to understand that so many of these factors are entirely out of the admin's control. Having lots of members does not magically make you money. So please, if you think you can get users to click ads, go and work your magic - I'm waiting. Otherwise quit bitching.

By no means am I complaining about the fact that we don't make money on the site - I'm just trying to keep the users in the loop about what might be happening with the site - something Jeff never did. When I accepted all these members to the site, I was expecting to pay at least a hundred per month. But go ahead and keep complaining about the fact that I've spent 110 dollars of my own money every month to keep the site open. How much have you donated? Oh right... clearly you care.

Those who volunteered to pick up some of the bill are doing it because they WANT to - they were excited at the idea. They know from the beginning that zoklet would not be making money. In fact, Trueborn made his offer over a year ago - I just never took him up on it until now. The ONLY reason the site is still open is because I want it to be. If I cared about losing money, I'd have pulled the plug months ago. I do this because I enjoy it - not because I expect to make mad money off of it...

Also, the idea behind selling webspace or email addresses is not to give people awesome services but to give SOMETHING back for those willing to donate on a regular basis. It's like in highschool when you had canned food drives. The class that brings in the most canned food wins a pizza party. Of course the canned food is worth way more than the pizza - but that's not the point. The point is that you're giving away food (or money in this case) and receiving something in return as a sign of appreciation.

I also run a REAL webhosting business if anyone is interested - but money will not go to zoklet.

Again, you're missing the point. There IS NO incentive to donate - that's why it's a donation. The webspace/email address is just to show our appreciation.

And for anyone who doubts zoklet's current financial situation...

We currently owe 158.61 GBP (great british pounds) to deus - he can verify this. We've got a spreadsheet with the last year and month's server payments and bills. The last time we had positive money was on april 14th of last year when we had just over 7 pounds.

I think you misunderstood - when I said "affiliates" I was referring to companies who were willing to advertise with us - not people who visit the website. Ad affiliates never like to be associated with sites like totse or zoklet. I've applied to countless sites on commission junction (cj.com - the BEST in the business) - all denied. What is the minimum balance required?

Also, how do the ads work? - How much do you get per click? Is it limited? - i.e. One click per IP per day? Do some ads earn more than others?

If we know this, then some users may be able to help out by simply adding clicking all the ads to their everday routine as a way of donating. With this info we could also calculate the amount of clicks needed per user per day to at least get to the minimum balance required.

I plan on donating chunks of cash when I can. Zok's an old friend, Zoklet (and my own affiliated page/forum) is a long-term project of mine, and I intend to help out when and how I can. The same is not expected of you folks, but we figured we'd put the option out there. If you don't want to donate and would rather buy zoklet products or services, that's fine: we're open to lots of ideas, especially if you don't like the current options.

But seriously - if you don't want to give your hard-earned cash to the evil dictator-wannabes that run this place (IE me and Zok), then...don't. We're not making you pay for the ability to use the site, nor are we insisting that the community needs to pull its own weight concerning server bills. First off, you can find several occasions in which I've answered what the mission statement of the site is and who our target audience is. If I recall correctly, the last person to pose the question was TJ. Since you (and perhaps others) still seem to be unclear about this, I'll go ahead and make a special page JUST for that. I'll stick it in the FAQs (after dinner).

Here are my ideas. I'm going to PM them to you to just so you don't ignore them:

1) Safeguards for donating. If I'm going to donate, I want to be sure you're not just guna ban me for some stupid reason and run off with my money. No bans, or a refund. Refund + interest if it's been a while.

2) Ability to ignore moderators outside of their own section. This one speaks for it's self. Should be an ability if you have donated. Some mods are dumb as fuck.

3) Make me business manager. I'll deal with all the financial runnings of the site and ways to make money. I'll do it for free at first. When I start generating real money then you can pay me a % of profit. I'll be investing money in safe bets on football matches. And some not so safe bets. Along with better affiliate links, and making people click on them (eg most people here are American, so having an affiliate to EDIT, a British site, is of course going to be a dumb idea).

4) Custom user titles.

5) Demod wires.

Thanks for actually suggesting ideas instead of just complaining. I don't mind criticism, as long as it's constructive. In order:

1) I think that defeats the idea of a donation. Not only would it be more work to moderate - it's a stupid solution to an even stupider problem! If people getting banned is the problem, then allowing people to buy their way out is definitely not part of the solution - it just complicates things. Perhaps we should look into why people are getting banned in the first place (in another thread) instead of just finding a way to get them unbanned.

2) I'm all for this, actually - good idea. It'll take a bit of hacking to make it work properly, but this is not a bad idea (not sure if it's yours, but OK). How does this get us money?

3) Why not just post your ideas in the Ideas and Features forum? Aside from the ideas you've posted in this thread, you give me very little incentive to pay you to manage profits of a website that gets under 20k hits per day. Zoklet doesn't have employees - we've got volunteers.

4) It's been suggested before - I don't like the idea of making users pay for standard forum features though - and since we seem to have the financial situation taken care of, I see no need to do this.
