View Full Version : making power from a 305 caprice clASSic

me and my buddy have this shitty $100 86 caprice classic with a 305 and a four speed auto that we are going to stock car race/demo at our local speedway and were wanting to make easy power with so we can get out of the turns. we were going to cut a hood scoop, open the exhaust up so it's just dump pipes, relocate the radiator [where to is the question, on top of the motor?], and look into getting a different gearing for the rear end. according to some research he did with the vin number of the caprice it's got a 2.73 gearing which blows for getting the fuck out of corners. does anyone know how we'd find out what other gearings were offered in vehicles with a gm 10 bolt so we can just swap the internals and not have to fuck around with welding up bracketry for a new diff and axle housing? how can we permanently lock the diff? just by welding the spider gears to the planet gear between them? will that hold up and keep them locked while we're whaling on if drifting through dirt? will the exhaust manifolds from a 350 bolt onto the heads of a 305 for better flow? or are the 305s manifolds skinny for a reason?

it's like demolition racing, some of it's circle track some of it's figure 8, it's more like old school stock car racing than modern racing.

I am jealous that America constantly hosts official events like this, and it all costs pocketchange. Private events, where you probably know everyone and are familiar with too many things, are just not the same. Calder park, Barbagallo, etc are different too.
A 350 would have been very good, but even the weak 305 isn't bad for a $100 bomb. But I mean it when I say that's a weak motor. It's pathetically underpowered, and can't take much more power.
Welding up the diff - Is the track dirt or asphalt (MACADAM :D)? Yes that's how you do it, but you'll break it when you corner on the road, or you could also fill it with extra steel to strengthen it then snap your axles. 3.73's will fit right in your diff, and are a very good way to go. If you're racing on dirt some knobbly tyres would be good too. Shockers in good condition are a plus, but not worth the expense to replace. Who says you can't just cut the exhaust off at the cat with an oxy? AFAIK 350 headers should fit, but you better check steering pump and air condition compressor clearance.
EDIT: Is this the class you're racing in?:

were shooting for a class above that but may settle for that. the rules arent really enforced, they enforce the obvious safety ones from my understanding but don't start enforcing car limitations until you're winning every weekend. there's guys there running car that you can hear the hot cam in and no one cares. the lower levels don't win anything worth having other than trophies, so it's just for fun...
we got time, they just let you show up on race night an race, season starts in june i'd like to say...

305 and 350 are the same block.
turn the lid to your air filter upside down. that will add a little. advance the timing 4 degrees.
put a bottle of rubbing alchol in the gas...it will light it up..this can cause engine damage in the long run. i dont think you care about that on this car though.
all i can think of at the moment. good luck
edit: bypass all of the smog control crap...if it is still on.
make sure you have a CLEAN fuel filter on it.

i was doing that 12 years before hot road ever though about it. professional G.M. mechanic 6 years, intermediate drag racing experience.
that is a noob trick, but works wonders for airflow.
have not read hot rod in years. sounds like they are still putting helpful tips in there, as ancient as they may be. lol

explain to me how that works? i was just going to cut and tig weld in a hood scoop with a box that directed the air into the air cleaner assembly with the lid off.
does the isoprople thing work?

That is way better...just gave you a easy way to increase irflow, but you have something better planned.
when you flip the air filter cover, the air can suck directly into the air filter container without having to go through the little plastic tube. and it makes a cool sucking noise when you gun it.
isoprople works great, you will get blue flames at times too. especially if it is running a little rich. lolz it aint good for the engine but its fun as hell!

Yeah, they got a 4hp wheel gain on a 340? in a Satellite.

It's practically the same block as a 350, just with a smaller bore. Cams and a carb would set it straight as far as power is concerned. Here is a build for it:
http://www.popularhotrodding.com/enginemasters/articles/chevrolet/0667_phrs_305_chevy_engine_blocks/index.html
Then again, you could always just say fuck it and throw in a stock Cadillac 454 or 500 in it. :)
how can we permanently lock the diff? just by welding the spider gears to the planet gear between them?
Yea, you can. I know that lifejunkie did this with, IIRC, a Geo Tracker and it snapped the differential the first time he turned on pavement. Definitely a dirt/gravel mod only.
Try looking for a differential from a Chevy truck. My boss bought a 91-ish government Suburban and it had a 4.56 Positrac.

ahahaha, you think i'd tell totse where i live? fuck that. come to the track the summer and look for some scum bags in a murdered out caprice classic cheifin' pipes and drinking beers.
my dad has 3.08 gear from an impala ss that he says will fit right in, i dont wanna swap the whole diff, i just want to drop in a new gearing, so i think i gotta settle for 3.08 open diff. it's likely the car will have to drive there so i guess the locked diff isnt an option anyways...
the cam from a factory 350 will slide right into the 305 block and use the same lifters and not have to re machine the rocker arm seats on the heads? does anyone know lift and duration differences off hand, or how about what motors i should be looking to pull cams from?
