So someone made cannabutter today...I'll just post exactly what they did. Looking for ways to improve it or suggestions and shit...if you have your own recipe post it.


I'll assume you already know what you need...a pot, a spoon, tupperware for the butter, cheesecloth (of coffee filters) and some good old fuckin' marijuana.

1 stick of butter = 1/2 Cup.

4 sticks of butter = 1 lb.

1 ounce of bud per 1 lb. of butter.

1 cup of water per 1 stick of butter.

You can mix and match for how much butter you want to make. In this instance there was tons of clippings and shake so at least 1/2 ounce of actual marijuana was used and well as 2-3 ounces of clippings.

Preparation, Cooking, and Straining

1. Grind up your bud real nice...especially if you have a 3 chamber grinder so you can catch those delicious crystals.

It'd be preferred if your clippings were ground up as well with a coffee grinder or something. These aren't.

2. 4 sticks of butter (I took the pic with only 3) in 4 cups of water set on medium. The key to making cannabutter is patience. It's best to do everything slowly to minimize loss. Make sure the butter is completely melted before you add your plant matter.

3. Once your butter is good and melted like above start slowly adding your plant matter while mixing slowly. You are trying to really get the bud soaked and mixed in well with the butter so keep stirring forever.

4. Now stir for 1-2 hours...but I wouldn't suggest going over three hours. Keep adding more plant matter as you go if you can. This is the step that the magic happens. Over the next 1-2 hours all the good stuff will leave the plant and bind with the fatty acids in the butter. Always keep stirring...always mixing...always adding more THC and cannabanoids to your butter. Don't forget it's okay to toke while you cook. :thumbsup:

This person had so much shake and clippings they couldn't use it all...so comb through and find pieces and leaves that are extra sticky...and throw them in throughout the process. Anything with trichomes on it will only make your butter stronger.

After awhile your plant matter will start turning really dark. Enjoy the smell because it should be filling your entire house by now.

5. Strain that shit. Use cheese cloth or something else as a filter...and strain out all that goodness from the badness. The juices flowing from this pulp is the magic that is cannabutter.

Make sure you squeeze out all the material very thoroughly to maximize your yield. You will inevitably lose butter in the cheesecloth and the pulp, but do the best you can. Collect as much as you can and don't forget to lick your fingers. This shit will be hot so use gloves. The roomate just took the pain and squeezed it with his bare hands. He's a beast.

The Finished Product (Part 2):

6. This is what your product will look like when you've strained it all through and collected it. See the two layers? One is the water you added earlier and one is the cannabutter.

Now put it in the fridge for at least 2 hours...this will allow the water to separate and the butter to harden...allowing you to drain the nasty water away and collect your prize.

Your butter will be ON TOP. Cut a hole through the layer or just squeeze the container to get your butter loose...and pour out the water. Make sure you save every single little bit of the butter because it can all get you high.

7. Now toast up and enjoy! About half of this will go into brownies...the rest is for whatever the fuck you put butter on. w00t!

Darkest butter is the best butter.

If you find a good way for kif or hash or oil post it, I've always tried melting the hash in but it never seems to mix right without adding some cream or milk.

If there was hash to be had they would have just tossed a chunk it...does it not work very well?

And how dark is "good" dark? Is the butter in the OP "dark"?

In my expierience, hash just doesn't like to melt the same rate as butter, it works better to break it up but it got kinda chunky didn't mix well but the cream helped it.

The butter in the OP is very nice and dark. Dark when it's liquid is what I was referring to not solid.

Do you think it would work the same with a smaller amounts? Like, if I were the just quarter the whole thing and use a 1/4 ounce of bud with 1/4lb of butter? Or would the amount be too tiny?

Nope...you could scale it down to even a cracker with butter and some weed sprinkled on it in the oven...they're called Firecrackers or something.

It's just like cooking with anything else...just cut it in half if you want less :thumbsup:

I honestly thought the dark green shit was the dirty water with all the plant matter in it. I thought the tall container would have the least butter, but it ended up having the most.

suggerstions: <-according to spellchecker, thats a word :hrmph:
1) Use a crock pot/slow cooker set to a temp that it just barely simmers
2) Freeze your bud before, it'll bust up finer and therefore more THC absorbed into butter

Thanks for this. I never saw a recipe callling for a crock pot...what temperature is recommended? And if it's barely above simmer should you increase the time it sits there? I saw recipes that called for 24 hours but I thought that was a tad much.

2 was considered but this shit was fresh...it barely got dry let alone frozen. One was aware of this though.

i've been thinking of trying this out. I wanna do homemade butter with the bread machine first though. (yeah, i have a bread machine,and apparently it can churn butter out of heavy cream. Wigged me the fuck out too.)

The high is very indica like if you ask me, very stony. I once had a brownie with like .5g of hash in it, and weed butter and had me nodding like oxy sorta hah.

It is....at least the ones that I made. They were made from a heavy indica strain though...damn near knocked me out. They made me sleep for an extra 3 hours this morning and I feel sluggish and out-of-whack. (I ate tons of batter and a finished brownie).

I'm really a noob too it...trying to find what's appropriate. The high is longer...but it takes long to settle in. Eating cannabis is the absolute safest way to consume it.

You're just gonna have to eat shit and find your middle ground...just like with smoking. I ate a little too much last night and it really turned me into a dead husk with a brain.

It takes a while to kick in but lasts way longer when you eat bigger amounts.

The last time I made cannabutter I put an ounce into 1lb of butter, and then cooked a huuuge tray of brownie/chocolate cake mix. It turned out great, but there was too much butter for the cake/brownie recipe so it had a weird consistency.

We split the tray between 8 people, and we were all high as balls from about 7PM til the early morning.

I took the scraps that were left in the pan, and for about I week I'd eat a little chunk (little smaller than a golf ball, probably) at a time and it felt like I'd just smoked a joint to myself.

Yeah if you look at the recipe the majority of the shit used was shake and trim...only about half an ounce of actual bud was used.

TASTES SO BAD.

I'm going to make chocolate butter cream frosting and hope it covers up the taste somewhat. Lawls last time I made butter it was with a shitload of hindu kush shake from my uncle (who gave me herpes, for all future quoting).

i want to just take a fork and dig in.

I dont know if it is the steam, or from licking the spoon, but its an hour in and i have an interesting kind of head high going, fingers feel fat and clumsy.

liquid looks like mud, so i'm thinking i managed dark.

i may try a few bites after i squeeze it.

you pour the water off after the butter resolidifys out...think buffer, it makes certain you don't burn the butter gives you more temperature control.

since none of the good stuff is water soluble, i'm not sure what would have given you that idea.

anyway, it's solided up now, the whole house smells nice, can't wait to try it on toast in the morning.

well I knew that, but adding more of anything (besides weed) would still be 'watering' it down, because you'd get more butter with the same amount of weed. Although I was wrong, because you pour the water off after!

I tried making it but I didn't put in enough water and burned the butter :(. It still worked, but it tasted really gross.

Remember that the amount of water you use really doesn't matter...as the butter will separate. It's just efficient to use the right amout but when in doubt use MORE.

If you don't want to put water in it, get two pots, fill one with water and get it boiling then put the second pot on top of it with the butter in it. It creates a buffer and won't burn it up and saves a little time.

meh, setting up a double boil for anything i won;t get to snort seems like to much effort.

the butter tastes great though, i used unsalted (whateverthe hell that means) but it looked like the same brand as the OP. It's kind of...green tasting. is the only way to describe it. its good, a little overpowering by itself.

so far i mixed a tablespoon into some mashed potatoes, and a couple hours later another got melted into a cheeseburger bun.

the potatoes were better, a little salt and it was good shit.

seems very much a lifted kind of high, as opposed to a stoned stupid i wanna become one with the couch kind of buzz, but that's a charactaristic of the strain as well, so dont read too much into it.


oh and cannabutter burps taste funny.

Not sure of the validity of this, but I've always been told to use unsalted butter for some reason. I always have used unsalted and never had any problems so I've stuck with it.

My buddy cooked a quarter of mids into oil, then baked it into brownies. I ate about 5 of them... I thought 2 was good enough but I wasn't feeling it so I ate 3 more. BAD MOVE (actually, very very good move lol). They take a long time to kick in, maybe about an hour, but when they kick in they get you REALLY HIGH. I was high as fuck for about 8 hours straight, like, barely functioning high. It keeps dosing you up with THC as you digest so once it starts to kick in you're stuck for the ride until your body digests all of it.

I'm sure cannabutter is even better than what my buddy did with the oil. He only simmered it for like 15 minutes because he was excited lol.

if you ever find yourself with enough trim to make 20 pounds of butter...trust me..do it in smaller batches.
