Is it possible to live of the land and have no need for money?
after my eduction is over i would like to learn skills for living off the land and just take off in to the wilderness and never come back.

If only it was as easy as that but who knows.

Yes, but it's up to you how well you can take the sacrifices!

Alone In The Wilderness

A great documentary I just watched about a guy named Richard Proenneke who lived alone for the best part of 30 years in the alaskan wilderness, only occasionally coming out to visit family. He built a cabin using just hand tools, grew his own vegetables and hunted/fished for food. He had an old buddy that flew in by sea plane to occasionally drop off supplies if he needed anything.

The cabin making section was my favourite section of the film, it was awesome watching him carve it all out by hand, fit it together and so on.

http://blog.makezine.com/DickProennekeCabin.jpg

The documentary shows him not only building the cabin but all kinds of things, videos of him fishing as well as planting his vegetables and so on. I believe the majority of it was filmed with a stationary video camera on a tripod. You see shots of the wildlife and surrounding area a lot, but the mainstay of the documentary is all about following him as he builds his cabin and expands on his self build through the harsh winter.

Richard or "Dick" ended up staying out there for 30 years, which is pretty amazing. Returned back to civilisation when he was 82 years old.

I'm sure all you survival/outdoor living/DIY buffs will be interested in his story, and will indeed enjoy the video.

There's plenty of Rapidshare and torrent links about but I won't post them here, may be against forum rules. If you can't find links PM me, but I'm sure google will prevail.

Some more links for your own interest:

What kind of sacrifices ?. I would love to take off for weeks months or even longer go hunting and build shelter live off the land. but what happens if you need to take a crap?
dig a hole and wipe your ass on the grass and wash your hands in the river? using spunk as soap? and clean your teeth with bark from the trees? take a bath in the river and use erm mint as deodorant and for tea and coffee grow you own.

solar power, portable wind generator, electric heater to run off of the solar and wind generator, electric stove, or just be a man and grill, and a really high quality knife and tomahawk, and a good all around gun.

Thoreau did it for a few years. It cost him a little money to set up, but once he was settled he didn't pay for shit and he actually made money by selling the vegetables he grew.

Read Walden.

Actually, Thoreau would like you to think that he did it, but the truth is, his mom came to visit and bring fresh muffins every weekend and he would go to the corner store for supplies about once a month. He was a dick for lying to me like that and I don't know that I'll ever forgive him.

Just fucking get a tent/set up a bender, even just a tarp and a sleeping bag, find some nice woods that you can get plenty of firewood from and that you can be pretty secluded in , get a nice rocket stove to cook on and general tat like pans and axes etc etc .. eat roadkill meat or hunt/trap your own, go skipping to supermarket bins that don't have compressors for other food, steal food from farmers fields and store it, set up a little garden, buy the minority of food that you can't.
Sell drugs to make up for the little that you still have to buy ..
Really not difficult, just get the fuck out there and do it, way too easy to say 'I'm not ready now' or 'some day' .. just pack your bags now and get the fuck out there and enjoy :)
To be fair though there's quite a few skills that you do have to know, it's amazing to me seeing people coming from towns or cities that either have absolutely no idea how to light a fire, either make it far too big or too small, use wet/poisonous wood etc..
But all we really need is food, water, shelter and warmth, already explained the food, find water from a stream and chuck it through a carbon filter/find someone who'll let you fill up water, a fucking tent and sleeping bag, and warmth from a nice small campfire/stove.
PS anyone in the UK who wants some face to face guidance I can come wherever within reason ;)

this was VERY interesting. thank you :)

This is also a boyhood dream of mine. just sustaining myself in the wilderness. eating what i catch. that would be the life. ive always wanted to start a very small community in the wilderness. no politics, no violence, just the people around you and some mary J.

I think this is very doable. Especially with solar/wind power, if you want electricity.

It would be easy enough to construct a cabin or shelter of some kind over a few weeks, and go from there. You just need a good chunk of land to hunt/fish/gather on, and access to running water and be able to use a purification system.

Shit major bump dude but yeah, it is possible to live "for free" however I think you'd find it better to buy some cheap land first. Set up a small cabin and do it the easy way. Results are in your favor if you set up a base opf operations that is stable no matter what the weather is like.

Once you have an established base of operations, cabin, etc.

Remember to build underground shelter(could also be used to store foods at lower temps) if you're in tornado or hurricane territory. Even if you're not in tornado alley, straight line winds can fuck your shit up if it's not built soundly.
