View Full Version : Selling my gaming stuff and going for a PC?
I'm thinking of selling all my games and consoles (PS1, PS2 and Xbox 360) on eBay or something, and putting that money into PC gaming. Always wanted to build my own gaming PC, but never really got around to it. Good or bad idea?
I would still want to play PSX games on the PC, so I guess I'd have to find the PC-version or emulate it. I know I can emulate PS1 games, but what about PS2?
I'm not sure if I'll go ahead with this (I'll see what you guys think), but if I do: anyone know of any decent sites I can buy parts from who deliver to the UK? And, speaking of parts, any recommendations on what to buy?
Also, what's a rough price I can sell my stuff at? I worked out I would get about £900 total (games + consoles) if I sold my PS1/2 games at £5 each, X360 games at £10 each, and the consoles at £200 for both. Too cheap? Too dear? Is this enough to build a decent gaming computer?
Thanks guys :)

The computer will be outdated by the time you build it and, I havn't done it myself so don't take my word on this, but a good gaming rig is probably going to cost you in excess of £1k.
Also, if you do build it be careful in case you fuck up. My friend destroyed his CPU and Motherboard on his first build. He had to buy another set for £200. Alot of money for a novice mistake. Be careful and try to practice on an old unused pc?

Xool, don't listen to this guy. He's a Debbie Downer. His friend probably has a rage disorder or some other mental problem. It's not the 1950's where if you accidentally touch a transistor, everything shorts. I know some idiots and women that built PCs and the PCs worked fine. If you use common sense and follow a building guide, you'll be fine.

Haha. Nah, I wasn't trying to put him off I was just sharing a personal experience. I read somewhere that its as easy as putting together really expensive lego. I've wanted to build one myself but I just don't have the money.
Xool, how many games do you have if you can make £700 from them?
Edit: I'll show your post to my friend :p should make him laugh.

My father and I just built one, for myself, though my dad did most of the building. We bought the parts from www.newegg.com I have a quad core, 9800GTX, 4GM DDR2, 500 GB HDD, Asus Mobo M3N72-D. After all the rebates it was like $600.
And the cool thing about the mobo is that it has a built in graphics card so it runs hybrid sli and has its own mini OS.

Pretty much spot on with what I currently have, and 600 is far less than the estimated 700-1k English Pounds.
Don't sell your 360. You won't make nearly enough from old systems and old games to buy a 600 dollar PC, I'd just save up your money, no need to get it instantly, prices will drop, and new tech will come out, giving you more bang for your buck.

More than enough to build an extremely nice gaming PC.
I wouldn't count on emulation for your PSX and PS2 gaming desires though. PSX is feasible, and some PS2 games will run fine on the latest version of the best emulator out there, but most won't and will feature all kinds of bugs.

Do you even know all the parts you need? What do you need help with?
Go ATi for your graphics card. Much more bang for your buck and they run a lot cooler and consume a lot less power.

What about CUDA?! kidding though, ATI if you're on a tight budget.

I havent used ati since the 90's. So I cant say much. I remember when their drivers would rape your pc resource wise. Then came along OMEGA drivers and I fell in love. Then OMEGA just lost their touch and this year I bought my first NVIDIA since 1998. I LOVE IT. To be honest I think its a matter of preference and performance. It really doesn't make a difference even with the "cooler temps and lower power draws". Just go with what fits your budget and what you like based on reading up.

Xool, how many games do you have if you can make £700 from them?
I wrote all of 'em down just now; 57 PS1's, 65 PS2's and 17 X360's.
I've been talking to my mate about how much I should sell them for (on eBay as like a bundle or something), and he's saying I need to crank my prices way up :p
Do you even know all the parts you need? What do you need help with?
I know all the parts I need, just not which parts I'm gonna go for (yet). I'll search around online for a bit, see what catches my eye and then post it here; see what you guys think.

I rarely play source. Even when I do I play on random servers so I don't keep track of what I mainly play on. Maybe I stumbled into it once.

I'd be interesting in buying some 360 games. However, a lot of games are now platnum [msp?] hits and only cost $20. Pm me a list and I might buy. But I'm guessing that you live in Great Britain, so shipping costs may make it too expensive for me.

Yeah, I live in the UK, so I'm guessing shipping would be pretty high. Besides, over here prices are higher for pretty much everything, so I'm trying to get moar monies :D

Well guys, I've done a little bit of browsing and come up with a quick list (and it was pretty quick, so this is (probably) nowhere near what I'll end up getting); just posting it to get a rough idea of what direction to go in.
CPU - Intel Core 2 Quad Q9650 - £270.00
Motherboard - Asus P5Q PRO P45 - £113.00
Memory - Corsair 4gb (2x2gb) DDR2 SDRAM - £50.00
Hard Drive - 2x Seagate SATA2 750gb - £77.00 each (£154.00 total)
Graphics Card - PNY NVIDIA GeForce 9800GTX+ - £141.00
Computer Case - ?
Power Supply - Corsair 750w TX - £101.00
DVD Burner - LG Blu-ray & HD-DVD - £76.00
Monitor - Hyundai W240D 24” - £305.00
Keyboard - Logitech G15 - £58.00
Mouse - Logitech G9 - £36.00
Which actually comes to £1304.00
I haven't searched for a case yet, but I'll look for one when I do a better browsing session :p
Quick question: is it worth buying a sound card?
Thanks guys :)

That 9800GTX+ price seems pretty high to me, but I'm in America so I don't know what computer parts go for across the pond.
You also don't really need a 750W PSU, but if you want it that's fine.
You could save some money buy going with a different CPU, but that one is good if you're willing to spend that much money. Honestly, there aren't many games that are optimized for quad cores. In fact, there are still games being released that don't even run on more than one thread, so they don't even use all of a dual core. It's a cool thing to have to be slightly future proofed, but you're not going to see any benefit in 90% of the games out there.
As for the sound card question, it really depends on what you're going to be using for your sound. If you have a decent set of speakers or a quality headset it's probably worth the investment, but if you're just going to be using a $20 headset or something don't bother.

Only douchebags buy soundcards.
Did a bit more searching today, and managed to cut down the cost a little bit:
CPU - Intel Core 2 Duo E8400 - £140.00
Motherboard - Asus P5Q PRO P45 - £113.00
Memory - Corsair 4gb (2x2gb) DDR2 SDRAM - £35.00 (price cut! :D)
Hard Drive - Seagate SATA2 1.5tb - £108.00
Graphics Card - PNY GeForce 9800GTX+ - £141.00
Computer Case - Antec 900 - £83.00
Power Supply - Corsair TX 650w - £81.00
DVD Burner - Optiarc AD-7200S - £18.00
Monitor - Hyundai W240D 24” - £305.00
Keyboard - Logitech G15 - £58.00
Mouse - Logitech G9 - £36.00
Bringing it to £1118.00
Took what you said about the CPU into account, and the E8400 (to me, at least :p) looks alright. Sticking with the same motherboard and memory. On my other list I had two 750gb hard drives, but it seems cheaper to just buy one big one.
I've left the graphics card the same, but there are cheaper ones (I'm using ebuyer.com to find this stuff): http://www.ebuyer.com/search?sort=pricelow&subcat=2489&q=9800gtx+&limit=10&page=1 I haven't looked into it too much, but is there a reason some are cheaper? And is it worth buying a cheaper one?
Found a computer case; seems alright. Took 100w off the power supply - is 650w too much? Not enough? Changed the DVD burner since I don't really need a Blu-ray player. Same monitor, keyboard and mouse.
So, any good? :)
Also, I have a question about high definition. The Hyundai monitor is "full HD", and has VGA/DVI/HDMI ports. So, to get HD quality, would I just have to connect the monitor and graphics card with a DVI cable (since I don't think the graphics card has a HDMI port)? What about sound?
Sorry about the noobishness :D

If you go AMD you should be able to get a Phenom quad core for only a bit more money than that Intel dual core. Don't drop any power on the video card. I would also go back to the Corsair 750W. Trust me when I say get a reliable power supply. I can guarantee the Corsair will never blow on you. When I built my comp I cheaped out on the power supply and it literally blew up on me, I'm surprised my comp is okay.
As far as the case goes, fuck the Antec 900. Everyone and their mother gets that thing. Get a Cooler Master. I have a Cooler Master Centurion 5 case and it's awesome, completely screwless assembly! You just slide your drives in and lock them down with plastic sliders, and cards lock down with plastic clips instead of screws, making swapping shit out easier. You can get versions with or without the side window, and it only costs like $40 or $50.
Cooler Master Centurion 5. It's a kind of minimalist case, but well worth it. It even has foam filters on the front to slow down dust accumulation. Not to mention is has good airflow.

Don't drop any power on the video card.
How much are the ATI cards going for over there? A 4850 or 4870 would do you quite well. If they're significantly cheaper than the equivalent Nvidia parts you should give those some serious consideration OP.
I would also go back to the Corsair 750W. Trust me when I say get a reliable power supply. I can guarantee the Corsair will never blow on you.
He's still going with a Corsair though, just a 650W. And that's still more than enough to for the parts he's going to have.
If you go AMD you should be able to get a Phenom quad core for only a bit more money than that Intel dual core.
Really depends on how much money he'd be saving. AMD is well behind Intel these days, Intel's just making better CPU's.
When I built my computer the only reason I went AMD is because I was saving like $60 compared to the equivalent Intel part and I was getting a pretty nice case for free. $80 for the CPU and I got a $60 Thermaltake case for free.
Also OP, I would suggest you shop around. Like, with just a quick search I was able to find this 9800GTX+:
http://www.novatech.co.uk/novatech/specpage.html?ASU-98GTXP
That would be saving you nearly 30, and getting you a game to boot.
