Getting random redirections

Sometimes when I click a link it takes me to a completely random thread or page. This is not an infrequent occurance.

A recent example: I wanted to go to my CP, but it took me to a thread in Mission Support.

I've had a few weird redirects too, most are usually to the porn forum, but the worst one was when I ended up in BC. :eek:

Okay, just a second ago I tried to enter the thread in GS "Ass Cock Cunt etc.". It redirected me to a thread titled "Incest Porn", posted by Samguy, lawl. It was funny, but I still wonder why it redirects so randomly?

same thing?When that happens... hit page back and capture the url you tried to connect to when you got the message... record it into notepad with the date/time. If zok knows what url to look at, he can go into the master-logs and check the activity surrounding that particular transaction.

Fixed - this one had to do with the keyword "with" in the user title. We were SEOizing the member conversation pages to "members/[user_id]-[user_name]-with-[visitor_name].html" - it assumed that this URL was a conversation between a user named "dog" and "shifty eyes" - I changed it to "members/[user_id]-[user_name]-with-[visitor_id].html" so that it would use the visitor ID instead of the visitor's name.

FYI - this was NOT related to the other random redirects - this one was a user error (my error).

You would - I changed the URL scheme so that forum names are no longer in the URL - now only the forum ID is. If you get any errors from pages that the BBS creates (like the links at the top of each forum that lead to the parent forum - or links to threads from a forum view) then we've still got problems. I haven't seen any yet, though. Things might have righted themselves :)

There's no way I could have purchased the software and installed it on a test bbs - there's "phone home" code in vbseo so that they can check your license against your forum URL. If I were to have tested this, they would have canceled my purchase and I'd be out 150 bucks.

The only negative testimonials that I read were in relation to server speed. I even asked some of my good friends (former vb programmers) who had nothing but good remarks.

What makes you say I didn't think things through? Oh right - nothing. You never have anything to back up your arguments. The fact is, there's no way I could have foreseen the redirect problems that we're having. I did all kinds of research on the product before I installed it - I did more research on this very issue after I installed it. Nobody else has had this problem (spectral even looked - ask him, since you clearly believe nothing I tell you).

If others DID have this problem, don't you think a solution would have been posted with it? Don't you think I would have applied the said solution? If there were no solution, do you think I'd have installed it? There was no way to predict this problem - I've done countless hours of digging through vbseo.com to try and find a solution but to no avail. Even if I did think to myself ahead of time "maybe we'll have random redirect problems if I install this..." I wouldn't have found any reason to believe this was a possibility because nobody else has had this issue. I really don't know how else to explain this to you...

If this were an issue that every BBS that ever installed vbseo shared... Yeah, I'm sure we would have known about it well ahead of time. It would be a known issue. Even if we didn't do research on the software and blindly installed it - we still would have found more information on it (and likely a solution) after installing it. The fact is, there's nothing on this problem listed at vbseo.com - that's why I'm having their support staff debug it for us.

Again, if you want to help us fix the problem, start posting some bogus URL redirects here - the more info we have, the better. If you want to discuss your admins decision making and thought process, make your own thread. That's not what this thread is for and I won't warn you about it again.

Edit: just to show you how unique this problem is, if you search "vbseo The page isn't redirecting properly" on google, zoklet is on the FIRST PAGE. There's only one relevant link (the first one) and it doesn't help us in the least. On the up side, that's proof that vbseo IS improving our search engine results - since we made it onto the first page.

It seems like it is more often than not redirecting to a member's profile. I disabled the rewriting on user profiles - we'll see if that helped at all.

Why must you screw things up? I thought this was supposed to make zoklet faster. How is redirecting to random threads helpful or faster? If anything that is slower than how it used to be.

Actually, our SEO jumped a LOT while it was installed. Threads were indexed by google waaay better. Considering that we get more than 60% of our visitors from google, I'd say that's pretty important.

Also, what good are the search optimizations when you click a link and it takes you to an entirely different thread/forum? It would make more sense to me to have the links take you to the page you tried to click on. This would mess up search results, no? For example, I search for "zok is an idiot," I get a thread, but when I click it I end up in COW in a thread talking about nipple piercings. You might as well have not even searched. I guess that's why I'm the expert. I just know how things are supposed to work, and apparently you don't.

It's called Page Rank. The regardless of whether or not a person actually FINDS the information they expected to, they will still be brought here by their search engine because of the SEO urls. If you never find the site in the first place, it doesn't matter if you can find the page you're looking for.

Hell, half the threads that people DO search for don't have the content in them that they expected - regardless of whether or not they get a bogus redirect.

i just installed linux and logged onto zoklet. i have been getting redirected like crazy. just a couple of minutes ago i started getting 404 page not found errors when clicking links in Hot Topics.

This thread was for the sole purpose of linking me to bogus redirects. I linked the folks at vbseo to the thread also - they were trying to wade through the off-topic posts in order to find these reported errors.

Anyway, there's really nothing left for this thread - the whole thing is moot.
