Usually grief or despair, maybe an overwhelming sense of joy?
Just a song that overloads your mind with a crazy emotion out of nowhere that only that song gives.
Some people may not have found a truly impacting song.
Mine is Space Oddity by Bowie.
Exceptional storytelling that gets me right into the mind of Major Tom. The unresolved ending of lost communication leaves me feeling a huge sense of uneasiness and i always feel like im the one up in space all alone. Then i feel the despair when i lose communication and control of the vessel only to look back at earth knowing all is lost.
Whats yours?

There is a sort of animalistic feel I get from Careful With That Axe Eugene, specifically "Live at Pompeii". Strangely Rush's The Main Monkey Business reminds me of this feeling.
Sometimes when I listen to Lenny Breau, despite his genius, I feel depressed. This is because I remember that someone strangled him. Not that I have trouble celebrating what he gave us, before his untimely and in my opinion tragic death... :(
Good thread idea.

I get a strange feeling sometimes when I really get into listening to Meshuggah. Like if I'm listening with a decent pair of headphones to the first 5 tracks of Chaosphere, or Bleed on obZen. It's pretty much indescribable, but something like the 'fuck yeah' feeling you (I hope, this is going to require a lot of relating to) get when listening to a good metal riff, combined with a sense of awed confusion trying to count the time signature, combined with something else.
Also, I like In The Halls of Awaiting by Insomnium, I find it strangely emotionally uplifting for something so melancholic.

all the music i like builds strong emotions in me.i can't just pick one because they produce very different feelings but equally as strong. i will however post one song just to contribute something. first there is a mountain by donovan. if you haven't heard it go listen to it now. first time i heard it i honestly laughed pretty hard. i still get a large grin on my face when i listen to it. it doesn't matter how shitty a day i've had that song will aways put me in a good mood.

Yes. This is the point of music!
And I will mention that this song (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VqD3Df5Jcbc) makes me want to fucking destroy everything (in a good way). The part starting at 2:55 is just amazing.

Go ahead, call it a cliche and attack my "old fashioned taste" in music, but this entire sonata is a masterpiece.

Johnny Cash - Hurt.
I know he's not the original artist. The NIN version is good music too, but it's Johnny's that gets me.

My Heart Will Go On by Celine Dion kicks me in the face every time I hear it.
