I was leaning towards the electric variety as they are more compact and a little less fragile than a traditional cello. I also hear they are easier to play, especially in the higher registers. Im curious as to the tone of them. I do have a nice tube amp meant for guitar if that would help liven it up.

My budget is $500. Can I get a good instrument at that price, or should I just save up?

While im not a cellist, i do play the electric and regular violin. In the 500 dollar range for cellos...you're going to get very crappy instruments unless you find a hell of a deal.

For what it's worth, I have a student-grade cello probably on the lower end of the price spectrum (doesn't sound half bad though) and it was about $2,000. I don't think electric ones are much cheaper.
