This thread is will compare the contributions to heavy metal between America (Canada included) and Europe. Which continent is the victor?

Let's see (the bands are in no order)

Europe: Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Venom, Celtic Frost, Judas Priest, Bathory, Mercyful Fate, Carcass, Mayhem, Dissection, Emperor, Behemoth, Dimmu Borgir, Gorgoroth, Burzum, Immortal, Rotting Christ, Amon Amarth, Children of Bodom, Arch Enemy, Kalmah, Meshuggah, Kreator, Sodom, Destruction, Motorhead

North America: Death, Slayer, Megadeth, Metallica, Anthrax, Testament, Atheist, Cynic, Dream Theater, Nile, Possessed, Cannibal Corpse, Overkill, Pantera, Iced Earth, Twisted Sister, Deicide, Nevermore, Morbid Angel, Obituary, Suffocation....

I think Europe is easily the victor, but I remember discovering some dumb cunt at my college that said that she only liked "European metal". What a conceited bitch. Obviously, when you look at what one could consider "Americanized" metal it's quite terrible (nu metal bands/metalcore bands -- I think metalcore originated in American but I'm not entirely sure) but America has a bunch of excellent bands such as Agalloch, Neurosis, The Melvins, Death Angel, Goatsnake, Obituary, etc.

I'm pretty sure deathcore originated in America though, so we automatically lose.

Europe clearly wins, but the US isn't without it's greats, such as Death, Agalloch, Wolves In The Throne Room, and Atheist.

This.

Overall, Europe has contributed more. Doesn't stop Metallica's "For Whom The Bell Tolls" being one of my all-time favourites.

I would say Europe would probably win, just for the quantity of goodness that Scandinavian countries created. That isn't to say that America hasn't produced some fantastic bands, and Europe hasn't produced some godawful.

As an example, Arsis, Nile & 'tallica from America are pretty standard great, Textures from Holland, Meshuggah from Sweden & SiKTh/Carcass from the UK are also excellent. :)

Europe pumps out better stuff, but there are some gems in America that have created what we have today. Of course America is breeding grounds for really terrible stuff, but for every 1000 terrible bands there was always 1-2 amazing bands that stayed on your playlist for a year.

America puts up a decent fight, but Europe has yielded a far better arsenal of heavy metal bands. Europe's got Carcass, Angel Witch, the whole NWOBHM era (auto-win), and what does America have? Slipknot. The real bad thing that Europe has churned out is DragonForce.

Depends on the genre, but overall Europe wins. Europe is full of quality bands with not as much core-trash bogging them down.

Kind of a silly question since most American bands draw a lot of influence from European music. EU is one step ahead in terms of devotion and creativity to the art.

Opeth, Gojira, Behemoth, Bloodbath -- all released some of the best metal in YEARS. Nile is okay, but I wouldn't call any of their albums masterpieces; and I liked darkened shrines a lot. We all know what happened to metallica, even carcass' last album was embarrassing. Slayer? Anthrax? C'mon...

And let's not forget where metal was born.. Birmingham 1968.

They've both influenced each other over the years. I wouldn't say either country has more quality metal.

Europe, hands down. American metal is a crappy knockoff of all that europe has done first over the years. The only American band I'm into right now is Macabre.

Brazil with Sepultura

Seriously now, I cast my vote for Europe, especially Scandinavia. Nonetheless America does have great bands.

I'd say Europe. Most of the metal bands I like are European.

Depends on the genre of metal. I'd say the America Florida/NY death metal scene rivals and pushes the envelope that death metal sat in during the late 80's and early 90's. Suffocation, death, cynic etc, all those bands rape.

How has no one mentioned Strapping Young Lad yet in this thread.

Anyway, I think Europe has a slight advantage over America in terms of who produced the best metal bands.

sorry to bump old thread.

but europe ALL the way. Burzum and Astarte and EVERYBODY!!!

the only bands i like from the u.s. are Ludicra and Geimhre. and death metal is shit. the only thing america might have on europe is industrial. like kidney thieves and marilyn manson (sometimes) is a LOT better than rammstein.

Without European - mostly british - bands, metal wouldn''t be what it is today. BUT then you have shit like Slayer which was spawned from a love of Judas Priest and is now the inspiration for shit loads of bands from Europe and the States.
Europe started the ball rolling but it's all to intertwined now to call out who's best IMO

This. It's silly to think in national boundries when you're talking about music anyway. That's why anybody that uses "teutonic metal" should be shot in the face.

Hey, you know I'd think the same thing, but borders DO affect music. You'll notice a difference between Norwegian and Swedish black metal for sure.

I'd give Europe more credit than the America's.
That's not to say that America hasn't churned out some amazing and important metal bands, but I think the fact that we churned out so many shitty Metalcore/core bands in the recent past makes us lose.

There are bands from all over the U.S and Canada that I couldn't live without. UneXpect, Death, Quo Vadis etc.

But fuck if I had to chose to listen to either one or the other... It would tear me apart.

Even thinking about it sucks . Good thing I don't have to chose.

Neither. I nit-pick from both, and I win.

I'd say it's a tie. Alot of metal bands you can just listen to and not even be able to tell what continent it's from.

and wtf?
American metal- LAMB OF GOD!
