View Full Version : In Consideration: How should Zoklet deal with troublemakers? [Should the few spoil it for the many?]

Recently the whole "should users be able to delete their posts?" issue has been brought up again with fresh discussion. The main points are:

- Users can destroy content posted by others and some people apparantly do it on purpose.

- Users should be free to remove any content they post, etc.

Of course, this thread isn't for that discussion per sé. Eventually, we have to look at the basic problem: Some users just like to cause trouble anyway they can. Eventually, if they can't delete their posts, they'll start editing their posts. it may be personal info slipped in, off-topic additions, etc.

They'll use the tools available to them, and then what do we do?

Frankly, there's always gonna be something like a 60/40 split of users who vote on certain issues like this latest one (post deleting). I think why Jeff ran an absentee dictatorship back on Totse.com was because it causes more trouble to attempt to deal with certain issues than to just let them stay as they are, and deal with them like usual.

We'd all like a perfect site, despite our different visions of perfection, but I say stop trying to deal with issues like these and just leave them alone.

There are always going to be trouble makers, and frankly, editing the whole site over such frivolous shenanigans is pretty obtuse. Frankly, I think it just makes them worse in the long run.

(basically, I'm suggesting we agree to sit back more, and fiddle less)

There's always troll, spammers, and idiot in every forum (I might be one of them).
Troublemakers is an attention whore. The more you give attention to get rid of them the more active they become (unless it's a bot). So, yes I agree with you. Just ignore most of the stupid post and stuff and post more useful content.

Trouble makers should be made moderators.

IF you want to remove content you've posted, EDIT YOUR FUCKING POST. It's easy.

Sure, someone else may have quoted you before you removed it. TOUGH SHIT. If you don't want people to read it, DON'T POST IT.

This. In the more serious forums, particularly those that induce arguments, thread deletion will become a crutch of the stupider posters to rely on.

I've already made these arguments, and the admin read them, viewed the poll, then ruled members can delete threads for any reason, including the posts of others contained inside them, and we're not permitted to undelete them either. I know it sucks, but that's just the way it is.

Lot's of things suck.
