I almost scored something good... I think?

To make a long story short, I got to clean up a sort of "crackhouse" today. It wasn't that bad, but the lady I was working for didn't pay me, but she let me keep anything that didn't belong to the real owner of the house.

I found all kinds of good stuff, but one that surprised me at first were these vials that said "Nitroglycerin" on them. I freaked at first, but then after rereading it I realized it said "Nitroglycerin tablets". There were about 9 vials, 2 were bigger than the rest. The small vials said 25 tablets, the bigger ones said 100 (I think), and they both said 0.4 mg's on them. Unfortunately none of them had any tablets left, maybe the people that were squatting at the house took them for some reason, I know it was for some kind of heart condition, but I doubt any of those people had a heart condition.

So my question is, if I had got lucky and the tablets were all still in there, would there have been any explosively good use for them? Extraction.... Something?

P.S. There is no brand name on the small vials, but on the larger ones it says "Nitrostat", and the bigger vials appear to be made by 2 different companies.

I figured I wouldn't have been able to do anything with them, but I was just curious. I guess it would be a more controlled medication if you could do something. I'll research about them more to figure out why you can't, or if you're wrong for some reason. :P

If the amount of tablets that would have been in there is right, and the ".04 Mg's" is referring to the amount of Nitroglycerin in the tablets and not all the material in each tablet, then I would have had 15 Mg's of NG. I don't know exactly how powerful that stuff is, but that doesn't sound like much. Even if I did have the tablets and could do something with them, it seems like it would be better to just make NG from scratch.

But I think I would like to keep my hands though.......

0.4mg is TINY and 15mg-30mg is what you'd use for a hammer test, unless you had some seriously l33t lab skills you'd never recover that small of an amount.

5ml of NG would give you a little bit of a bang, but 5ml = around 8000mg.

You can synth it with 70% HNO3, 98% H2SO4 and Glycerine - I've heard you can do it with KNO3 + H2SO4 + Glycerine but then you have little crystals floating around in your nitration bath which will make it even more sensitive to friction which you really want to avoid with NG. A guy at SM (IIRC) lost a hand and an eye from 5ml of NG when his glass stirring rod scraped on some NG on the bottom of his beaker.

Yeah I know the procedure to make it, but as I said I don't want to blow myself up. I once joked with my friend that when I'm old and rich I would have him make me some type of "iron man" suit, so I can experiment with this stuff as much as I want with out blowing myself up. :P

But yeah I didn't think I would have been able to do anything with those tablets, but when I saw what it said on the vials I was just really excited and wondered what I could have done with them, if anything. Maybe I should put some random tablets in one of the vials, and have my friend read the label. When they realize what it is, I'll hand it to them and warn them not to drop it because they'll explode, then accidentally drop it. :lol:

If nothing else, it least I have some cool vials that say Nitroglycerin on them. *shrugs*

Forget it, there are many more fish in the sea.
As for the synth use an air pump, geez, its sooo easy and cheap to get one. Fishtank air pump + glass tube. And like most nitrated compounds best not to inhale or taste. Those headaches are a bitch - its like having a cleaver jammed through the frontal lobe for the entire day. If I were to compare it to a hangover, I would rate it as x5 worse.
