I ran the beta on my laptop for a few days and really liked it, especially how they grouped windows behind an icon and aero-peek. I have a Toshiba Satellite A215 and everything worked out of box. Anybody else have any experiences with it?

Yeah I got in on the beta. It worked fairly well, no driver support for my integrated TV tuner though (Vaio laptop). The only thing that bothered me is that when you right clicked on a button on the task bar, you got some new bullshit instead of the classic context menu. Shift+right click brings up the classic one but that's a pain in the dick.

I tried it for a day and didn't quite like it. It brings up some pop-ups when you go to the taskbar and stuff like that bothers me. I guess its still better than Vista.
Need to remember its only beta though.

I was impressed. Seemed solid for a beta.

I haven't tried it but from the testimony it looks good.
How's the resource problem? Is it gluttony like vista or fine like XP?

It can run decently on netbooks and seems snappier. I think it does for Vista what XP did too Windows 2k

I still need to check that out on a real computer. I tried it briefly on Microsoft Virtual PC 2007 but that didn't work so well. I might check it out on my laptop sometime.

For all its definately an improvement to vista, it still seems to be playing catchup to other operating systems (symphony os, mac os x). Theres a nice slide from hardware/storage-method centric to user/content centric that I like. However it still manages to take up omgwtf levels of space, somehow.
I'm not overly impressed.

Installed nice and quick. Boot time is pretty good. Removed allot of the crap from Vista. Running smooth on a 1gb machine.
I'm undecided about the folder control in the taskbar. It's a good idea at heart, but it makes it a pain when navigating lots of folders quickly. I would appreciate it if they added the option of another bar above the taskbar, with the traditional window/folder view.
Appearance wise, it's nice I guess. I know though, that if a theme is released to make it look like XP, I'll be right in there. I'm just not a fan of big shiny buttons and bright colors everywhere.

I'm liking it so far, sux i can only have it till August though. Maybe a new beta will come out for it though. Windows 7 will be my OS when the real deal comes out though.

Did they just change the shell again, or are there any noticeable changes to the OS itself?
I use an alternative shell anyway, so that alone is not enough to make me switch.
I'll just download Windows 7 from Demonoid or TPB when it comes out properly.

What shell? I remember using BBLean. Very awesome.

Yep, I use BBLean, and have been using it for around 2-3 years now. Very efficient, easy to use, customizable (e.g. with a proper set up, you can have 20 windows open and still be able to work with them efficiently), and you don't have to get used to something new every time MS release an upgrade to their OS.
BBLeanSkin is especially useful, since it allows you to customize how your windows behave. I don't know what I would do without the "Stay on top" button and the "collapse to window title" one.
Hell yeah. It's been about two years since I've used Windows. BBLean rocked. Very minimal and efficient.
I also used to tweak the icons and other things with ResourceHacker.

I've seen screenshots of it and read articles.
is it true that tha quick launch things don't distinguish between running and closed applications?
how similar does it look to KDE from the screen hots A LOT.
performace wise: will i notice a difference? does it have prefetch enabled by default?

I'm trying the BBLean shell right now. Very interesting.
As for my operating system, I'm running Windows 2000 >_<
This computer has 1 GB of RAM on it, which was a lot back a few years ago. Now these Vista machines actually require that much minimum. Crazy.
One other thing that's on my mind... the reason this new one is named 7.0. Well, I know that there is a Windows NT 4.0. Windows 2000 is also called Windows NT 5.0. Windows XP is called NT 6.0. So this must be the next one... except it isn't a version of Windows NT, is it? Or am I wrong?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Windows_NT#Releases
Here's an interesting list. It puts Windows 7 as Windows NT 6.1. Windows 2000 is NT 5.0, as I thought, but XP is 5.1 and 5.2.

Apparently this is the official reasoning for the naming.

I heard on /. that they were going to fasttrack RC1. Any truth to this?

I'm running build 7000, only problem is that I get video lag using CCCP with FFMPEG and CoreAVC.
Worked fine on XP, and MPlayer works fine on Arch.

I was running build 6801, and am now running 7000. It's missing a few things from 6801, but also has a few things added. I still prefer Ubuntu, but as far as Windows goes, it's my favorite.
I gotta say, this is the best OS I've ever used. It recognized my wireless card, video card, and sound card, without needing to download any drivers. It runs very well on a 30gb HDD, 1gb ram and an older processor(not completely sure of the speed). Internet connection could be better, but other than that, I love it.
I'm getting the full version when it comes out, because if the beta is this good, the full release will be amazing. :D

So what exactly do you like about it?
Faster application switching? Faster HD access? Just the shell UI? Window manager UI? Just the general feel with nothing in particular grabbing your attention?
I'd like to hear the details please, if possible.
