..in playing a third person stealth/action (player's choice) infiltration game, set in today / near future, with rpg elements, memorable characters, plot twists, several ways to approach each problem? If yes, would you prefer it to be mission based (with many various locations, ~30 minutes of gameplay each), or have one/few continuous chunks, with objectives popping up along the way (Half-Life-like)?

Sounds like Beyond Good and Evil.

With a few bits missing. Heh.

Sounds like something Bethesda Softworks would release.

I prefer continuous, more open-ended games personally. Missions are too limited.

Sounds like the upcoming espionage Action/RPG hybrid from Obsidian to me.

Alpha Protocol is it's name, and considering it's lead writer is the same guy who wrote Planescape: Torment, I've got high fucking hopes.

Yeah. Fallout 4 has a nice ring to it.

I hated splinter cell. Not open ended enough. All the fun moves you can only do at certain parts of the game. Killed it for me.

Don't set it in the future, set it in 1985.

Don't set it in the future, set it in 1985.

That is actually a good idea.

Except you don't get enough freedom. E.g. you can't "invent" any global events to aid your plot. You can, however, use the real events and create a more personal story (like in Mafia:CoLH), or invent some behind-the-scenes conspiracies (but be very careful with it).

If you can recreate the feel of the time, it can really pay off.

apparently the upcoming splinter cell game (conviction) is taking the series to a whole new path. it is going to have RPG elements and will sort of sandbox and will involve stealth and disguises.

so pretty much like a hybrid between hitman and deus ex

if I remember right, MGS2 took place sometime around 08/09; I'll gladly take another spin through that, again.

and holy shit, Mancannon: Obsidian are working on a new game? I thought they did a great job on what amount LucasArts actually let them finish of KOTOR II.

Yeah, it's called Alpha Protocol and it's an Action/RPG hybrid in the same vein as Mass Effect. It's also going to be using the same dialogue tree system, which I'm personally a huge fan of.

You can always take the easy way out and propose an "alternate reality" based on a different outcome to a major world event.
