What's to be done?

So, I was reading the news last night. People getting raped in the Congo, civilians being killed for sport in Gaza (while Palestinians take potshots at Israeli villages with rockets), the ice caps are melting, and all that. People getting arms, legs, heads blown off by shrapnel.

And I had a realization...I can't do a damn thing about it. So, what's to be done? Should I do my best to fix [i]something[i/]? Finish college and be a doctor in Africa? Or perhaps a diplomat, and try to fix middle eastern relations? Or do I move to the wilderness, live in a shack like Thoreau, and write off the rest of humanity as a bunch of loonies?

Our world is fucked, and no matter your political or philosophical outlook, we can all agree on things that are wrong with it. But nobody can do any right to fix it. So what's one person out of 6 billion to do?

I couldn't agree more. What can you do? Well you can do what Greyfox said and be a sort of "by my example," passive, person. Or you can be the protesting, neo-hippy, kind of person who stands with a megaphone and rallies people to a cause. Either way, or even something in between, is a perfectly legitimate thing to do.

Just make sure you, yourself, are displaying the kind of action you want from the world.

Why would you want to help those people? They are just going to procreate and make more of them.

The US has a growth rate of something like 0.8% (births). The third world is like 4% annually (births).
