Okay basically this is just one option I've been looking at. Can anyone help? I can run about a half mile before I'm winded and I can push it to a mile but my time is pretty pitiful (like 8-9 minutes the last time I did it cause I literally have to stop and walk for a little bit. yeah...) and I'm absolutely fucking whipped by the end of it. but I've been a pack a day smoker for 3 years and I could never really run too well before that either.
I have a criminal record (no felonies) but 5 misdemeanors mostly drug/alcohol related, and I'm on probation for two years.
I haven't worked out at all to speak of besides infrequent pushups and situps and shit for like a year. Back then I maxed out at 140 lbs (;/)
I'm 140 lbs and 6'0.
Which avenue would be the best for me to take, and would it be wise to get in better shape for cardio before I enlist or do you think they can whip me into shape as is? I'm not positive about this but I like to think about different options.
Also, will they even take me being on probation? and uhh, yeah. basically any background info would be appreciated.

yeah you sound like the kind of shitbag that the army would for some reason take, come on in.
best thing to do is go to your local recruiting station, tell a recruiter what you just told us and he will give you the scoop. it will be gay getting waivers for all that shit, and i have no idea about probation. but you might want to get in better shape than that. you would still be able to pass the PT tests by the end of basic even if you went in at the shape you are at now, but if you got in shape now you will not regret it and it will make life a hell of a lot easier. getting winded at a half mile is not good.
google the army pt test standards and get to at least 60% for your age group in pushups, situps, and the 2 mile run and then go in

yeah with your record and education the Army is looking like your best bet. Army grunts not going to be fun but it has great benefits. Listen to Phlegm; he joined off a hs diploma too so he would know the best of anyone here besides a recruiter
and come on dude i went from being dead after a 9 minute mile to being less tired after a 24 min 3.5 mile run in a couple months just by running everyday (like 3 miles, dont be a pussy)

What about me? I'm flatfooted, can run a mile pretty quick, i'm 16, and will be on probation for 30 months, 2 felonies but they'll be expunged after my probation.

okay lets see... those felonies expunged or not will come up eventually(seen it happen personally and they were discharged for lying)
The flat footed thing used to be a good enough excuse to avoid the draft, so thats a no go also. Maybe if you went for some support role like truck driver or something... but thats just brainstorming.
its looking pretty bleak for ya man. Mind if i ask how you got two felonies at the age of 16? thats some pretty heavy stuff

Before you even set foot in a Armed Forces Careers Office sort your fitness levels out.
Well, let me just ask the obvious question: Why are you thinking about enlisting?

Not true brah. I'm flat footed and run a 9:30-10:00 1.5 mile. Just get some footwear designed for flat feet or just use insoles like I do. So thats not a problem.
As for the felonies, I don't know. But I think it'll be fine b/c you're just 16 as long as you don't lie and say it never happened. I'm pretty sure the army would take you, not sure about AF, they're downsizing and getting really picky.

cool news about the flat footed thing. That only apply to airforce? I really only know about the Marines

I didn't even know it was a big deal. When I had my medical crap done, the Dr said i might get medically disqualified, but I guess since I had no problem on the PT test, it didn't really matter.
I guess its only a problem if it hinders you from doing PT in any way.

Does enlisting make you a citizen?

the flatfooted thing shouldnt be a huge deal with the army. they will check your feet out at MEPS, but im pretty sure its not a deal breaker. when youre in processing at basic, the day you go shop for your PT shoes and shit the drill sergeant had us all line up in front of a box and with notebooks open in our hands and he would stand in front of the box. we all went up one by one and stand on the box, he would look at our feet real quick and would write one of 3 letters, one for regular arches, one for high arches, and one for flat footed people if i remember right. and then you buy the shoes made for your type of foot. and then you never think about it again

No dummy.
You still have to go through the normal path to citizenship even if you have a green card or an equivalent waiver and are joining the military.
"Officially" the military can't do anything to help you but they do make the process go a lot quicker for you although this is technically illegal. It speeds up your citizenship request thought, is all it does, what they can do is make your final interview for it come faster than it would otherwise, but in the interview you got to do well enough and the military can't really help you beside the help you are already getting because it looks good on paper for someone wanting to become an american that they are willing to serve in the armed forces.
You can't even enlist without a green card or waiver that covers the time you would be doing in the military anyway.

Like he said I can run fast as fuck even with my flat feet. I run a mile in like 7 minutes, if I remember correctly. And you got to be a badass, that's how.

okay settle down BA. Untill you get that 7 minute mile translated into a 21 minute 3 mile than youre not in good military shape.
And sorry to hear about the felonies. I know id have a couple if i got caught doing the shit me and my friends did back in highschool. Fuck its all about luck sometimes man

pretty much, nobody cares how fast you can run a mile. army pt test is 2 miles, and for regular day to day pt youre going to be running more than that. a mile is a warm up, and 7 minutes is good but its not "fast as fuck"

Go for it. It'll be hard at first but you'll toughen up real fast. Yeah of course it would be wise to get into shape before you go there. I always wait until I'm forced to do things as well so I can't really talk but I've learned from my mistakes that practicing before hand means you do way better when the time comes because everything you learned in your own time you would have had to learn anyone. In the case of joining the army you wanna build up your stamina before you get there cuz that way when you get there you'll do way better than if you hadn't built up your stamina.
My friends been in the army for a couple of years, I was gonna join myself and heres the advice he gave me.
1.) Go to bed early to make sure you'll get enough sleep
2.) Fill your canteen up to the very top because you'll need every last drop
