Come on!
You should be interested in losing FAT.
Muscle weighs more than fat, so if you lose muscle you'll lose weight.
But your metabolism will slow down (muscle burns calories, bodyfat does not), and soon you'll be skinny fat, and you don't want that, do you?
People that starve themselves in order to "lose weight" should be thrown in a box, carried to a desert island in the pacific and forced to attend a lecture on weight training, how eating fat won't actually make you fat, and how low-calorie cereal bars are useless because they have a FUCKLOAD of carbs.
I hate cereal bars.

Are we splitting hairs again?
Some people don't want to replace that 20 pounds of fat with 20 pounds of muscle because then they'd just look buff as opposed to toned.

You can't look "toned" if you don't have muscle.
And why one earth wouldn't anyone want 20 lb of muscle?

Stop thinking in extremes.
20lb of muscle is still 20lb. Sometimes its better to be a bit lighter.

I agree with you partially. When I say I am looking to lose weight I do only mean that I am looking to reduce the stores of fat in my adipose tissue. However it IS Convention to simply refer to this as losing weight. Currently I am overweight enough to warrant lowering calories. Once I get to the point where I need to lose only about half a stone I will start muscle training more and ramp up my protein consumption. However if you were here and could see me you would agree my most pressing thing is to get rid of my love handles.

I agree with this, and think women in particular should be made much more aware of this fact.
I know so many girls who try or have tried to improve their looks by just dieting and not doing proper cardio and resistance training. They think that if they reach a certain weight on the scales then they'll look fantastic, which is not the case at all - they should concentrate on toning up for better results!
