View Full Version : the Simpsons
Okay, I have yet to see a thread on one of the most prolific cartoons of all time - The Simpsons. I stopped watching many years ago, but only recently started re-watching the show from the most recent season backwards - so far, I'm almost finished with season 3. It's interesting to see how the narrativ structure has changed so much - the pacing, the kinds of jokes, and even the use of certain characters. It was really strange to see the Maude Flanders' death episode and then watch the previous season where she's alive and well...
Any fans of this show? Any naysayers? let's talk about The Simpsons!

Hooray! You keep getting better and better, Fish!
I do enjoy the show. Tons. I've practically got to, really. It airs twice daily on local television.
Do you think the tone of the jokes, the characters, and the show in general was for the good? Sometimes I think yes, sometimes no. Some of the older episodes seem too self-righteous. By that I mean, they end up with some sentimental, morally "friendly" scene. Not that I blame them. Television has changed drastically.
Other than that, I've got to say the older episodes seem more thought out and clever, though the new ones have me laughing uproariously (sometimes). Other times, it's hit and miss. I don't like to be elitist about this, and take both the good and bad from the show.

Probably my favorite cartoon. And one of the few series I prefer dubbed than the original English voices.
Too bad the newest episodes aren't as funny. But episodes like this:

Are pure win. You fail if you cannot recognize that scene.

The simpsons will be studied by anthropologists of the future, it is an archive of the late 20th century - early 21st century.
I'm not sure if there has been a television event that I've followed closely since "Who shot Mr. Burns"?
It was such a mystery. :D

Funny yeah, but because of the random jokes they throw out there. Old simpsons is better.

They do capture society accurately, don't they? Like the scene in one episode where people are calmly walking downtown, power goes out for a sec then when it flashes back on, everyday citizens smashing windows, looting and stealing.. and that was way before Katrina. he he The Simpsons is brilliant.

Anyone catch the Hi-Def episode? I torrented it a few days ago, things look so much more detailed.
Oh, and The Simpsons is way funnier than family guy, especially when blazing.

Simpsons is always my favorite thing to do stoned if I'm watching T.V
I like season 5-7 the best. After that it's a little stale.. then the newer hi-def ones are just try-hard.

Totally.

I liked the more less-detailed animating of the older seasons. I believe the 'fresher' animation style nowadays is only there to try and make up for the lack of comedy.

My fifth birthday party was Simpson's themed and I got The Simpsons: Sing the Blues; we played it on a ghetto blaster.
Do the Bartman.
The episode where Homer plays baseball was pretty great; as was the one where the kids play hockey.

I loved that one song with Marge, Springfield Soul Stew (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eO0nUfr8y0A).
My favourite episode is 'Bart's Inner Child' where Homer gets the trampoline and the whole Do What You Feel Day.

I still enjoy watching the Simpsons. Sure, the older episodes are better, but the quality hasn't deteriorated so much that I don't want to watch it anymore.
I liked the one with the Smashing Pumpkins.
Everything else is meh.
Unky Herb!
Mr. Plow
Flaming Moe's
Wacking Day
Itchy and Scratchy Land (I AM THE LIZARD QUEEN)
The Halloween Episodes
Lisa it's your birthday
I bent my wookie
Homer doesn't go to church
Astronaut Homer
Camp Krusty
Stonecutters
It's just a little airborne, it's still good, it's still good.
There are just quite a few quality ones.

I love the older episodes. One thing I do like is how Homer is sort of a different character. He wasn't really completely stupid, but just a dopey dad who had a good heart. Now he's just completely stupid, and you can't respect him, whereas I sometimes had sympathy for the old homer because you could see that he was really trying.
Bart the Murderer is one of my favorite episodes too. I love any episode that has Fat Tony and the mob in it. :D

Over the six years "The Simpsons" has been on the air, we've received dozens of letters from fans wanting to know more about the show. Tonight, we'll answer some of your questions. Professor Lawrence Pierce of the University of Chicago writes, "I think Homer gets stupider every year." That's not a question, Professor, but we'll let the viewers judge for themselves.
[screen: "Second season"]
Homer: [disguising his voice] Hello, my name is Mr. Burns. I believe you have a letter for me.
Employee: OK, Mr. Burns. Uh, what's your first name?
Homer: [pause] I don't know.
-- 0:11 from 7F22 ("Blood Feud"):
[screen: "Third season"]
Marge: Well, Homer, maybe you can take some consolation in the fact that something you created is making so many people happy.
Homer: [sarcastic] Ooh, look at me! I'm making people happy! I'm the magical man from Happyland, in a gumdrop house on Lollipop Lane!
[walks out, slams door]
[sticks head back in] Oh, by the way: I was being sarcastic
[slams door]
Marge: Well, duh.
-- 0:22 from 8F08 ("Flaming Moe's"):
[screen: "Fourth season"]
[the theme from "The Flintstones" plays]
[a man looks at his watch, and pulls a cord on a whistle]
Homer: Yabba dabba doo!
[slides down pipe, crashes through window into car]
[singing] Simpson, Homer Simpson,
He's the greatest guy in history!
From the town of Springfield,
He's about to hit a chestnut tree.
Aah! [smash!]
-- 0:29 from 9F10 ("Marge vs. the Monorail"):
[screen: "Fifth season"]
Homer: Hey, guys! Look what I smuggled aboard! [shows a bag of chips]
Buzz: Homer, no!
[he opens the bag; the chips fly everywhere]
Race: They'll clog the instruments!
Buzz: [shielding eyes] Careful! They're ruffled!
Homer: I'll take care of this...
[as the "Blue Danube" plays, Homer floats about, eating chips]
[his head approaches the ant colony]
Aah! Ants!
Ant 1: Protect the queen!
Ant 2: Which one's the queen?
Ant 3: I'm the queen!
Ant 1: No you're not!
Homer: Nooo! [his head smashed the colony, and the ants float free]
Ant 1: Freedom! Horrible, horrible freedom!
-- 0:53 from 1F13 ("Deep Space Homer"):
[screen: "Sixth season"]
Homer: "No TV and No Beer Make Homer" something something.
Marge: [timid] "Go Crazy"?
Homer: Don't mind if I do!
[makes lots of silly noises, then chases Marge]
-- 0:18 from 2F03 ("Treehouse of Horror V"):
I think the 5th season's clip was the funniest.
Horrible, horrible freedom!
[9F11] Selma's Choice
Driving to the funeral {dl}
Patty: I can't believe Aunt Gladys is really gone.
Selma: Her legend will live forever.
Brain: Yeah. The legend of the dog-faced woman.
Homer: [laughs hysterically] Legend of the dog-faced woman! Oh, that's good!
Marge: HOMER!
Homer: Wha--? D'oh!
I can't believe I forgot about the legend of the dog-faced woman...funniest thing i've seen/read/heard since Falafel is bullshit!
