Storming Intrepid is the name of a 1988 novel by Payne Harrison. It is a Cold War era technothriller. The plot centers on the in-flight hijacking of the United States space shuttle Intrepid by a Soviet agent and the United States race to retrieve it before the Soviets can return it to earth.

A saga of a post-Reagan Star Wars. In his first novel, Harrison has already mastered the art of effortlessly intricate plotting. There is the thrill of crackling confrontation between the superpowers with KGB shenanigans of unprecedented boldness. There is a wealth of characters that are not only likable but also recognizable as contemporary American heroes. And best of all, there is daredevilry that evokes the feisty dogfights of classic war stories. After building a wonder of technical wizardry high above the earth, Harrison lets his heroes duke it out in a fierce showdown near ground level. This novel hums with vigor and resonates with the hottest daily news. Fans will hope that Harrison, like his models in Cold War intrigue, will produce more.

I picked this up at a dollar store and am only partway through it but am enjoying every moment. I think it's out of print so you can only get used copies but who cares? Amazon has a bunch for sale. Highly recommended. Too bad there isn't a movie, I think it'd be good.

I have to say it looks like an extremely trashy and chiche spy novel, but then again you know what they say about books and covers. Is it as trashy as it looks, OP or is it a diamond in the rough?

I suppose trashy is subjective, and it has its moments more or less especially with the lame space fighter (but it's somewhat plausible now, what with X-37B and all) but I've enjoyed it, a lot.
