The early 1980's is your best bet, as they were abused and commonly sold for near nothing beause nobody saw any future value in them..
..or if you're a pop culture icon made of green plasticine who plays in a rocking band with his sidekick Pokey the orange pony and friends, you could walk into the cover of the script for Vanishing Point and steal Kowalski's, you might light to try the late 70's.
These days it's hard to find classic muscle that you can afford, and repairable classic muscle that you can afford is rarer than a steak that's still chewing grass. All the southern states have been well and truly scoured, and nothern states will likely only turn up rust. Barnfinds are more on the heartbreaking side than exciting, when the hole in the decrepit barn's roof has been allowing snow to fall through for 30 or 40 years.
You can still but a used 'project' Challenger from one of the less desirable years ('74 onwards) with relatively piss poor options (318, emissions 440 etc)that has been butchered, if you're desperate.
I know of a good forum if you're really keen on Challengers, but you have to be pretty seriously into it.

My buddy's salvage yard has a couple 1970 Challengers that are just yearning for you to come say your last goodbyes before Mother Earth claims them forever. I know because I've been going there to get parts for the '68 Barracuda in my garage. :3dsmile:

This is in the cold, snowy state of Maine. One of them might be salvageable, but honestly they've both been picked apart so much now the only thing they really need is for someone to put a fork in them, because they're done.
I don't know where you are, but just look around in your area. Before you even do that you need to figure out exactly what kind of car you're looking for. It depends if you wanna go out and buy some polished show car, or if you're looking to get yourself a project car and build it from the ground up. And it ultimately comes down to how much money you're willing to spend.
Patience really is a virtue in this case. I know from experience how exciting the thought of owning your dream muscle car is, but that doesn't mean you should rush into things. I don't care how rare of a muscle car it is- You can always find another out there, and odds are for more bang for your buck.
My story is a testament to being patient and constantly looking- Earlier in the summer I saw a '68 Barracuda on craigslist in my area. It was an Arizona car (Clean title). Mostly stripped, but had almost all it's parts with it plus a 440. And it's undercarriage was immaculate. He was asking $4000 firm for it, which was a little out of my price range... So I forgot about it and moved on. A few months later I saw the same car listed again for $1500 firm. Come to find out the guy that was selling it fixes up all kinds of old cars as a hobby and sells them. Winter was coming and he had no room to store the Barracuda, so he needed it gone asap. Guess where it is now. :p
Just save your money (You can never have deep enough pockets when it comes to owning a muscle car. Whenever you think you have enough money, you don't.) and keep your eyes peeled. Look through your local classifieds and search online. Eventually something will come along. It might be a long and tedious journey, but in the end your persistence will always pay off. There's nothing better than the feeling you get from driving down the road in a muscle car.

I thought Vin Diesel had a Roadrunner in that movie. Vanishing Point had the Challenger.

In the original fast and the furious he has a 70 Charger, and at the end of the third one he has the road runner, I believe.

..and in between (in 2 Fast 2 Furious), he drives a Hemi Orange '70 Challenger R/T, that he wins off some Latinos.

Hahaha. I watch these kinds of movies for the odd muscle car, not the actors. You're right, it was some black guy, not Vin Diesel...
..although saying that, Vin Diesel is half black.

Haha, I see where you're coming from. And same here, It's about the cars, not the actors or crappy plot.
In other news, I think I may have indirectly instigated a partial high-jacking of this thread. Sorry :(

Truth be told, most movies that are remembered as car movies are actually pretty shitty as far as plot, writing, and acting go. I mean, think about it:
Vanishing Point - A bunch of trippy, aimless hippie bullshit
Fast and Furious - Paul Walker just can't act, I'm sorry.
Bullit - What was the plot of that movie, again?

I watch the Fast and Furious movies not for the cars.. But for the massive lulz related to the acting, plot, and ricer shitboxes.

Yep, that's the truth even if I'm a hypocrite by saying that right now whn I've got a (ultra low budget, admittedly) projet going on just for the sake of having a project.

Aye, I'll give it it's own thread sometime. It's not much to look at at the moment though. It's being stored in an unheated garage, so with it being Winter and everything I haven't been able to work on it much. All I can do is wait impatiently for Spring to get here like a little boy waiting for Christmas :p

Death Proof, now that's a good car movie.
The Italian Job (the real one, not the shitty remake) was a good car/heist movie too, and had decent acting and a strong plot to go with it. No muscle cars though, sorry.

Running on Empty / Fast Lane Fever (USA title, even though it was made years before the River Phoenix movie Running on Empty) is a really good one from 1982, but few have seen it. If I knew how to seed/operate torrents, I'd make a torrent of it (I own it and other car movies on DVD). I want to see that German one about the Mantas, I think it's from 1989 or 1992 or something. White Line Fever too. and Hi Riders. Looks like I better get busy NEED MORE GOOEY.

Well I have been looking for my project muscle car for about 6 months now and I must say the best place to find bodys are at salvage yards. The car you want is most likely the car you won't end up with. I was looking at a salvage yard for a 69 GTO and found so much more stuff I could get my hands on if I couldn't find the GTO. I haven't found the GTO yet but I have ran across body's of other cars I'm very interested in. Your best bet to find the car you want is on the internet. I saw a 72 Chevy Apollo all original with a 350 for 14 grand on sale now that a deal. The key is, save your money, look hard for what you want, and expect problems.

I have it on my computer as I type this out. I've never actually been on the uploading end of a torrent, but if enough people wanted it I'm sure I could figure it out.
Also, when talking about muscle car movies you can't forget Two Lane Blacktop.
