so im a pretty average build person, not stick skinny..but not overweight. but recently due to deppression and locking myself up in the house, ive been eating non stop...and now im starting to get fat :(

my problem is that i will eat something, then right after that i want something more..it seems like the more i eat the more hungry i get, and it doesnt make sense...its like im never actually full or satisfied.

so how can i go about now wanting to eat so much and lose some of this fat???

i think the problem may be the depression. you didnt eat so much before right? if you work on the depression maybe you wont eat as much

poppy

well yea it most definatly is the depression, before i could actually look nice in clothes, now im disgusted with myself, thats also part of the reason i dont want to go out anymore is because i look awfull, ive let my self go...making me more depressed

switch to nearly all vegetable intake. (avoid the starchy ones).
lots of fiber, lots of vitamins, they fill you, you can eat as much as you want without guilt.
You also may try getting out more just to get more sunlight.
Some people get depressed from lack of full spectrum light in the winter.

I went through something similar a while back. Carbohydrate cravings are pretty common with depression, but it sounds to me like you should be focusing more in fixing the depression which causes your eating problems. Is it clinical or as a result of bereavement if you don't mind me asking?

Back on topic, exercise will work wonders, even if you just start going for a 30 minute walk twice a day. Bananas are a good one too, the tryptophan in them is a precursor to seretonin (a.k.a the happy chemical). Drinking lots of water and adding more fiber to your diet will help keep you off the carbs, but as you probably know nothing will really satisfy.

Theres not much you can do to stop to cravings so I would work on lifting your mood and in the mean time find another form of escapism like reading or video games. Maybe go and see a doctor too if you haven't already, prozac is like sunshine in a bottle :D

This is weird, because i always seem to stop eating when i get depressed.
But the only thing i can tell you is to smoke weed. To me its kinda of like a do all drug, you can find uses for it anywhere.

In this case, take some time to smoke a nice fat joint, and relax, and just think about everything thats going on in your life. Think about where you made a wrong turn or decision.
marijuana can be very meditative if you know how to utilize it right. Just dont give into the munchies and further your weight gaining problem.

i really dont know what kind it is...probably more bereavement as it got bad once my relationship ended...but i started to feel detached and unhappy even before then

that proably would have helped me in the past, i love weed soo much, but lately its been having a negative effect on my mind..i cant smoke it anymore without turning paranoid and thinking all kinds of crazy shit..alomost skitzo like..but also i dont know if it has to do with my friends fucking with me or not

I guess in the end it doesn't make that much difference once its started. But if its lasts more than a few weeks you should definitely go and see a doctor.

A bit off topic here, but if it doesn't pass soon you might want to look into Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, it sounds kinda freaky but its really effective. Mind Over Mood is a good book covering the basics, I cant remember who its written by though.

hmmm this sounds interesting.

btw poppy you should try smoking it again, without your friends around to fuck with you. and this time, really think about your life. sure it might scare you a bit, but how will you ever deal with your problems if you cant come to realization?

To truly stop your eating habits, just find something entertaining to do somewhere away from your kitchen, really gets your mind off eating excessively

i don't think weed will make you happier. probably just make you more hungry :p

just try to drink a lotta water and eat healthy things like apples, oranges, grapes, and celery until you feel better. :) i actually like the taste of these things too, but idk if you do too.

poppy
03-01-2009, 12:14 AM

yeah celery definitely doesnt taste as good as apples or other fruit but i think it actually burns calories so thats why i suggested it. i have the opposite problem of you- i am never hungry when im feeling bad and so im way too skinny and i cant gain weight even if i tried.

When I ate healthy, and I mean truly healthy (organic vegetables, proper meat, no grains), you find you eat much less, and are much healthier.

thats how i want to start eating, but its hard when you arent in control of what food is in your house, my mom works for a food delivery company so we always have all this delicious ready to eat food around, so its hard not to binge on it

Don't over indulge this stretches your stomach out so when you do eat a normal sized meal you won't normally feel full and you'll want to eat more..

Also drink lots of water after meals this too will help some studies say people eat more because they are not getting enough water.

You don't necessarily have to cut down on your eating, just start running or something.

Try and get as much natural light /sunlight as you possibly can, helps HUGE amounts for me when I get a bit depressed .. and with the cravings in the end you just have to make a reasonable mental threshold for how much you want to eat, and just DON'T go over that in any circumstances .. exercise is good too, if you're not doing much already cycling can be easier to start than running as you can idle at times while still moving etc, takes less energy too ..

Poopy, there's some things I want you to do for me and for yourself, because this problem is particularly distressing to me.

1.) Calculate your BMR http://www.bmi-calculator.net/bmr-calculator/
2.) Eat 500 Calories LESS than this every day.
3.) Incorporate 20-30 minutes of Cardio activity into your life per day. That's just a nice little run. 25 minutes of 6mph running (10 minute mile) burn 341 calories at just my height of 5' 11'' and 176 pounds.
4.) Contemplate weightlifting and more importantly; a gym membership. Look at Stronglifts 5x5 (a great beginner program http://stronglifts.com/stronglifts-5x5-beginner-strength-training-program/)
5.) Consume a diet that is 50% Protein, 30% Carbohydrates and 20% Fats.
6.) Finally, see a therapist man, or talk with someone. You sound exceedingly fucked in the head the more I read.

Continue this process until you've achieved your goal.

Cheers!

I don't know why people think NOT doing something is challenging.

Go out and do something and don't give a fuck about what people think of you, because they really don't care what you look like.

Go walking in the countryside and as others have said, stop eating bread, potatoes and other pointless starchy foods.

I would also suggest a higher protein diet, protein is filling and to turn it into blood sugar it needs alot more energy than carbohydrates.

One other piece of advice, sexercise. Will increase seretonin levels and should require some energy if you do your part. Having seen your S&A thread I will donate my services...

Here's what works for me man, whenever I go to do something that will have a negative impact, or not do something that will have a positive impact. For the purposes of example, let's use your over eating.

I ask myself "Do you really want to be the kind of person who is controlled by their eating habits?" and the answer is always no. If you answer no then how can you eat that box of cookies? You can't or you're a liar. Put it down and go do something else. A hobby helps me man, something you can put a lot of time into.

When I used to get depressed, I would not eat. I used to go several days without eating really anything. Then I started working out, and deciding to eat healthy and my depression went away.
