If you aren't sure, then this is a good resource for how long something will last.

"you cant eat cooked food thats been out for more than 2 hours"

^ wtf.

I tend to make big soups or stews and still eat them the day after, I just leave them in the crock pot with the lid on. I haven't been ill since I was a child.

Ambient temperature and humidity are also variables.

I'm currently eating a slice of pizza which has been in a box under my bed for 4 days. I tend to do this a lot...

I also cook double and put half in a tub in the fridge so I can eat it in a couple of days. That also hasn't harmed me at all.

^ so that's what those quotation marks were for

People are so fucking terrified of eating anything that's past its use-by date, too. If it smells good and looks good, then it's good to eat, even if it's a week over. I once made a curry with some meat that was a day over its date and when my housemate found out, she refused to eat it and shouted at me for 'trying to poison her'. I should have punched her in the face for being so fucking rude, but instead I just vowed never to cook for her, or let her eat anything that I've cooked, ever again. I once found her about to eat some pasta that I had made (for everyone else, not her) and I threw it on the floor. Anyway, I'm digressing, she's a fucking bitch and deserves to be beaten up (she likes to start fights 'for fun').

And some of the students retards that my girlfriend lives with... christ... they put literally everything in the fridge. Leafy vegetables, margerine, milk, meat - that's fine. But oranges? Eggs? They don't need refridgeration. One of them even puts bread in the fridge - FUCKING BREAD IN THE FRIDGE. Then he keeps complaining that it's gone funny - no fucking shit you fucking idiot, do you know what condensation is? Are you aware that putting something moist in a sealed bag then putting it in a very cold place will lead to condensation? Are you aware that water + bread = fucking disgusting mess? Are you an idiot?

cold oranges on a summers day is pretty good.

though i think the biggest victim of refridgeration is the tomato

eggs DO need refrigeration

They really don't, not if you plan on eating them anyway.

In Europe they are sold on normal shelves, not in refrigerated* sections, and last about ten days at room temperature. I mean, yeah, you CAN refrigerate them and they'll last longer if you do - maybe if you live on your own and like to buy 30 eggs at a time it's a good idea to pop them in the fridge, but in a busy egg-consuming household there really isn't any need.

Plus if you like making your own fresh pasta, dough etc, eggs at warm temperature result in better dough.

Hard cheeses are also fucked over by Mr. Fridge. I keep mine wrapped vinegar-soaked cloth in a cool cupboard (the best way to store good hard cheese). That said, I do keep 'everyday' cheese in the fridge and only my expensive Pecorino in the cupboard.

Apparently there is no first 'd' in refrigerate or refridgerator even though there is one in 'fridge'. There is also no 'u' in deodorant, even though there is one in 'odour'.

whats the purpose of the vinegar soaked cloth? is it to stop mould spores or something?

Yep. Keeps it a bit moist too.

to me, pizza has to be eaten the day it was ordered, or the day after provided it was refrigerated overnight. i had a bad experience eating some pizza that turned out to be like 3 days old and was just left on someone's counter. bleh. and pizza that's been reheated in the microwave tastes like shit. much better to just eat it cold.

as far as fruit goes, with the exception of bananas, i've found that fruit tastes better refrigerated. apples, oranges, grapes, berries. all better cold than room temperature.

according to that site, lunchmeat sliced from a deli counter, like turkey, should only be kept 3-5 days in the refrigerator. i've always arbitrarily kept it 7-10 days. hmm.

It has just occured to me that a) I live in England and b) I live in the north of England and c) I don't ever turn the heating on.

So my room temperature is probably a lot lower than your room temperature. Maybe I don't need to refrigerate things as often because of that.

My dorm is stupidly hot. We haven't had the heating on at all yet and the windows are open basically all the time...and you still can't use the kitchen for more than half an hour at a time because you'll die from heatstroke. Don't know what genius made every kitchen here windowless with only a tiny shitty fan. This fan vents into a common duct shared by all the flats, so if you turn it off, hot air comes out the fan.

Right now I've got some chicken under the grill and the heat is unbearable, hence why I'm not in there...

If I leave butter out the fridge, it seperates and goes to a runny mess in a matter of hours. I wouldn't dare leave eggs or fruit out there - nothing worse than a lukewarm apple!

My girlfriend's hall is the same. The rooms are so hot that you could just sit around naked and still be warm, although the kitchen has a big window which is always open so it's pretty cold in there (plus, I don't know what the shits she lives with feed on, but it fucking stinks so you have to keep the window open).

By the way, do you have you pay for your bills? When I was at university they were included (although it was something like 90ppw, and I know I don't spend 30 pounds a week on bills...), but some universities are talking about charging if you use over a certain amount of water/electricity/gas etc.

Edit - must remember that G&G isn't greasemonkeys, so I'm not allowed to go off topic constantly...

I have stored chilli safely for 2 or 3 days on the hob with no squits. is this due to the chillis?

my dorm includes utilities in the flat rate, which also consists of basic cable tv and high speed internet access. but it's all overpriced as shit so it's not like they're giving us any breaks. i'm tempted to just leave the shower on when i go to class to fuck them but some shit would probably somehow burst or flood. it's happened before.

my building last year was always hot as hell. had to keep the window open all through the winter, and the heat vent closed. but this one this year is the complete opposite. but the heat only has one setting: fucking hot.

3 more weeks and i'm out of dorms forever. yay.

Good site but something I'll never use. I know when to get rid of something. I don't leave shit sitting out either, people act like it's hard to throw saran wrap over something and set it in the fridge.

Ah, it's nice and cheap here - I'm not living in the Uni accomodation itself, but instead in cheap student flats about a mile away at the college. £65 a week, all inclusive with a TV license for the lounge and "broadband" internet. Flat rate power means I leave everything on, all the time. The downside of cheap accomodation is a small room (I can touch two walls with arms outstretched) and broken fire alarms.

It's awesome because there are no security guards and people here are nutters. I went to an indoor BBQ last weekend, which involved lots of carpet on fire. We responded by having an indoor bonfire complete with toast, marshmallows and hot dogs.

However, I'm moving to a house with 5 other people next year. Should be good!

English Gentleman, I've been scoffing from the same tub of rice salad in the fridge for 4 days now without doing toilet time. It's smelling a bit funky now so I've just finished the rest of it. I think 2 days is probably alright. :D
