Because it was 'different'. I liked it, but I liked the Wrestler a fuck of a lot more.
Apparently it caused a spike in child sponsoring in India. Liking this movie seems to be a fad.

Because it was a movie about brown people.

I actually really, really liked it. It definitely stood out from a vast majority of the same old movies that my friends and I go to see... It was a pretty profound movie, I'd recommend it.

Because it's different, along with the fact that it's an awesome film in many ways. The only thing I hated about it was the credits sequence. The characters dancing to stupid music really killed all of the emotion of the movie and was reeking of gay.

I do think that it deserved some of its oscars, but with others, like the music-related oscars, i think it was because it didnt really have that much competition.
overall, i thought the movie was quite well done. It took me a while to understand how much the story of the Three Musketeers fits into it.
The beginning was quite a bore for me, but it was necessary. what i didnt like was the constant changing of Jamal's brother as a good guy or bad guy. I think it would have been better if he was consistently a bad guy, even in childhood, to provide a bit of contrast at the end.
Overall, great movie, and not just because i liked the Bollywood dance number at the end.
Seen it, but wasn't too interested in it. It was okay nothing great.

But his brother was a cunt even as a kid. Remember how he locks Jamal in the toilet? Then sells his autograph? Yeah.

Well I'm sure he wasn't so heartless as to let them take his brother's eyes... Meh, 'twas a good movie regardless. 7 thumbs up!

I hate to say it but Jim is pretty much right on this one...
1. Get huge budget
2. Film poor people with ruined lifes
3. Inject it with a cheesy love story about a girl who'd rather whore herself out to some sadistic, rich fat guy than go on the run with the "love of her life"
4. Cause white people to go on a guilt-trip and then save them in the end by a happy ending so they can leave feeling a-okay
5. ?????
6. Receive Oscar

Agreed, the credits were a huge WTF moment.

Exactly, Imagine this movie being about poor whites in america with the same plot and dialog and everything. Wouldn't have nearly as good ratings...
