Chicago, IL - A Brighton Park man was charged this morning with aggravated battery for allegedly biting the tip off the right thumb of a paramedic who was trying to intervene in as he attacked his girlfriend.

Emergency medical personnel responded at about 1 a.m. today to a call of a person down at a parking lot in the 2600 block of West Cermak Road. According to police, Jose Gutierrez, 25, was hitting his girlfriend, a 23-year-old woman.

As one of the paramedics, a 27-year-old man, tried to separate the two, Gutierrez allegedly bit the tip off the paramedic's thumb.

Gutierrez, of the 2500 block of West 40th Street, has been charged with one count of domestic battery and one count of aggravated battery to first-aid personnel, according to police.

The paramedic was treated for the bite wound and a fractured finger at University of Illinois-Chicago Hospital. Gutierrez is due in Cook County criminal court on Monday.

Now come the jokes - The offender wasn't arrested because the paramedic couldn't finger him.

Anyway....a speedy recovery to the paramedic and let's hope this lettuce picker is free of H.I.V. and a number of other diseases that can be transferred by body fluids.
