i run 3 miles a day and it keeps me in shape but my upper body isn't very big. I was wondering if i used wrist weights if my arms and shoulders would get bigger. One thing i'm worried about though is damaging my joints or spine. Thoughts?

Depends how much weight you use, and how you run, and you're not going to get very big from running.

Running with weights is a common cause of shoulder injuries. In addition, the weight you're running with just puts unnecessary strain on your knees in an exercise that's already very hard on them. Running isn't an exercise whose purpose is to train the upper body. It is primarily a cardiovascular. If you want to develop your upper body, look into exercises that actually target the upper body.

How about doing push ups and stuff like that when you aren't in the middle of a 3 mile run?
When you run, you generally swing your arms, as a counter to leg movement, without much "lifting" or arm muscle work.
Plus, anything you can do for thousands of repetitions generally isn't going to result in growth.
my prediction: arm weights won't do much for your arms.

No dice man.
If hypertrophy is your goal wrist weights are not the ticket.
You'd be better off doing push ups and pull ups post run, or better yet at a different time of day than when you run.
Weight training is the best option but I think you'll get some benefit's from a body wight routine since you are a runner :D
Don't put un-needed stress on your joints.
I can tell you, being a runner, you're joints will hurt with extra weight added on. Minimize stress on joints.
Do some weight lifting. The stress is put on gradually, and will do less damage.

Keep in mind that while small weights may not seem like a lot, the centrifugal force applied from the rotation of the shoulder joints down towards the hands can cause significant pulling on the joints, so much so that my friend was running with 20 pound weights on his hands that his arms quite literally fell off.
