View Full Version : Chicken: Not a classy move?

So I've heard that ordering the chicken at a nice restaurant isn't the classiest choice. Apparently it shows your lack of a refined palette. Anyone else feel this way or heard this before?

Who gives a fuck, chicken is delicious, if you base your decisions on what other people think of you, you are a mindless robot sheep clone.

I would agree, a chicken breast anyway is a bit bland most of the time at a restaurant compared to the other offerings.

I've never heard of that. I prefer thigh meat anyway, but I don't know why they'd assume that a chicken breast is somehow inferior to other items on the menu.

Sounds like someone's being horribly pretentious if they're stating something like that. Game birds and other poultry options aren't exactly easy to come by in many restaurants, so chicken or turkey are often your only poultry options.

some cooks I work with say chicken is for people who don't know what they want to eat. I could care less if somebody orders chicken

Perhaps they were referring to chicken fingers? Those can come off as a bit immature, if they aren't an appetizer sort of thing.

There are quite a few creative chicken dishes at restaurants. There's absolutely nothing wrong with trying and enjoying them. It's versatile and takes spicing well. A plain chicken breast isn't exactly flavourful, but I'm not sure who would serve it.

Like above, if you order fish sticks in a decent restaurant its a little childish but then I have seen some fish sticks that had some kind of expensive fish "cant remember off the top of the head" and it was 25$ a plate which I believe only came with 6 fish sticks with dipping sauce and some side so yeah the dish and restaurant matter if classy would even be a term to use in this occasion.

You've also got huge amounts of inbreeding, you pretentious twat.

Whereabouts in Suffolk btw? I used to live in Great Bentley, just over the border...

No, inbreeding is in Suffolk too.

If you don't believe that you have a reputation for it, go to Essex and ask them there.

And it's a good thing that you aren't giving away your location, even to the nearest large town, for I am actually a psychotic murderer. The way I decide who my victims will be is by finding annoying users on community websites and then asking them for their address, postcode and directions from major trunk roads. You have merely delayed your fate, however, as I will happily kill the families at all the tudor halls in Suffolk just to find you (so which is it shitcock, Kentwell, Priory, Melford, Seckford, Milden, Helmingham, Ravenswood?).

I presume you went to KEGS? That's a shame, I went to Colchester Royal Grammar so I'm already one ahead of you in the posh twit stakes.

Let me start off by saying I LOVE LOVE LOVE chicken..could eat it everyday and I would be happy. When I was 15 or some shit my dad, stepmom and her family who were here visiting from Cali, we all went to this 5 star rest. the only one in this area, and I ordered chicken..now her side is wealthy and upper class, and IDK I guess they were pissed I wasnt having lamb or anything just gave me a weird look then they said "Well why dont you order something else, you can get chicken anywhere" "This place is known for good lamb"...and its like no fuckheads if I wanted lamb I would have gotten lamb.

I love chicken but yea I have gotten the impression over the years, at nice places I guess you are supposed to order something you dont normally eat ...

I''ve never felt that I should not eat what I dont normally, merely I dont want to. For example, while out at a Restaurant unless their is a very special dish using Seabass (rather than just a fillet with a sauce) I will not eat it as I would rather try something I could not make myself.

pre⋅ten⋅tious
/prɪˈtɛnʃəs/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [pri-ten-shuhs] Show IPA
–adjective
1. full of pretense or pretension.
2. characterized by assumption of dignity or importance.
3. making claim to or creating an appearance of (often undeserved) importance or distinction; "a pretentious country house"; "a pretentious fraud"; "a pretentious scholarly edition" .

It seems that if they were placing exaggerated importance on ordering lamb when the guest wants chicken, they're being pretentious and rather unflattering as hosts. That's just me, though, mainly because I'm a fan of people ordering an entree they'll enjoy.

If a restaurant, or chef, has a specialty, I'm inclined to try it over something that I eat on a regular basis. I don't care what anybody else eats at a restaurant; it always depends on a person's taste.

AE5150
03-05-2009, 04:07 PM
I fully agree, Euda, but at the same time, not everyone takes food extremely seriously or is inclined to ask a staff member what they recommend. Even if they have a specialty (and personally, if I'm at a high class place, I'll ask what the chef's specialties are, but again, not everyone has experience with high class places), I don't think we should look down on someone because they want the Chicken Marsala over fettuccine instead of the lamb.

To be fair, the few of us who use that in our vernacular don't exactly pronounce it in proper English accents...usually it comes out "Don't be a wank-R!"

Considering a well prepared steak is one of the finest culinary traditions in the world, I think you're out of your league, kid.

Chicken can be prepared with as just as much skill and dedication as anything else. Not everyone just chucks it on a grill with salt and pepper and puts it over Alfredo, or breads and and fries it.

Chicken is less classy than beef because it is a bird. The cow is a rare, expensive animal. Takes a long time to grow and feed one. It produced a more lovely, bloody, tender cut of meat. Chickens take a few weeks to mature these days. There is no royalle chicken, no Kobe chicken, no Filet Chikmion.

It's no surprised the nigger is defending his fried chicken. Just check out his youtube channel.

My point was that "chicken", the bird, can be prepared in a massive variety of ways. A steak is a rather specific type of dish, thus your comparison didn't really make any sense. It would be similar to saying "Burgers and potatoes are unclassy foods", even though potatoes have a wide variety of preparations, ranging from fast food french fries to some gourmet au gratin dish.

And like AE said, steaks are most certainly a classy dish. Go to any nice restaurant and notice that among the most expensive dishes, several are always going to be steaks.

ANYWAYS, I'm generally of the opinion that no food is really inherently "not classy". Even cheeseburgers can be adapted to be appropriate in a high-end establishment. I think a big part of it has to do with whether it's finger food, as well as presentation/preparation. I reckon they could batter a chicken breast, fry it, have some fancy sauce concoction, dress up the presentation, and you'd have a perfectly acceptable, fancy "chicken fingers-esque" meal.

There are so many ways to prepare steak that it would make your head spin to try and learn half of them. It's a versatile thing and there are a lot of creative people out there.

I agree with you AE, not everybody has an interest in try new or interesting foods. People should order whatever catches their eye, pleases their palette, and fills up their belly. To some people, food isn't an interest, it's only a means to an end.

A good steak is not unsophisticated. It completely depends on the quality of the chef. I had a fantastic steak in Liverpool at the Atlantic tower hotel but the local pub produces the worst steaks ever.

Where I work people mostly order seafood. I've always thought of that as a "going out to eat" meat, and I didn't see anyone mention it here. Most people don't want to cook fish at home because of the smell, and people don't like cooking crab, lobster, or calamari.

Come to think of it I don't like cooking crab, lobster, or calamari either but I have to. I don't like ANY meat.

WTF? I slap a steak on my grill with some fucking pepper, and it's as good as any at the Atlantic Tower Hotel, it's not a matter of whether a fancy hotel cooks it, but rather how it's cooked. As far as I'm concerned, grilled is better than broiled; and medium-rare please, because I may get E.coli, but I will get it with a belly full of tender, juicy steak.

I was not saying only restaurant cooked good steaks...

I was simply using both those restaurants to illustrate the difference in quality. For the record I make a damn good steak as well under the grill after having been shown by my father:D
