Got about 13 today, my bag limit was 10 but i had a buddy with me and he gave me his 3 (Ok, it was the other way around actually) I breasted all but a few which were so hideously fucked up I didn't even want to deal with. My friend doesn't realize that you don't have to shoot the bird twice once it's on the ground until it stops moving. Even though it was weird that you could smash these fuckers heads with your heel and they would just flap their wings and shit even after their heads are pancakes. Great Hunting today though, I suck, but together we got about 20, couldn't recover a lot of them. Gonna try just skewering 3 or 4 on a kabob after I marinate them for about an hour? I accidently ripped the skin on a couple (I'm new) so hopefully they don't dry too much.

I'd suggest letting the distance to the target increase before you pull the trigger.
My dad used to go out in a small kayaky-looking boat and shoot Common Eider, they'll only take off into the wind and they're remarkably tough to bring down, once we ate one he had pretty much blasted up front and personal when it went over him, and we didn't find more than 2 or 3 shot in the meat...
Adapt the the distance you fire at, to the target...

To put it short,; your mate is an idiot then...
...And, involuntary or autonomous muscle spasms, or an instinctive flight reflex is common in just about any living organism on the planet, a chicken can run around for ages without its head, a deer with a blown chest can run farther than should be possible, and a rat missing 50% of its lungs can still manage to run a couple of meters before it keels over...

Anyone killing something should know these things...

Great Hunting today though, I suck, but together we got about 20, couldn't recover a lot of them.

Hmm, you might want to set up your angle of fire a bit differently then, it sounds like you wasted ammo with nothing to show for it...
I'd suggest you try to pick 'em off from a location that'll result in the doves coming down in an easily accessible area.
From your post I reckon you were using shotties, whenever I shoot something I use a high powered air rifle and go for head shots so the circumstances are quite a lot different, but then again, they aren't - I try to get my target into an area where they can't possibly reach a safe spot even if I miss by a bit, perhaps you could use the same trick and bring more meat home by the shell?

Personally I'd marinate them over night, but that's just me...

ya i was using my old semi auto winchester 12 gauge. Corey you're a hippy fag just like princess zek. Only had a small window in which to shoot, basically when they were right above us. To one side there was a dairy farm, in which most of them came from/were going to. To the other there was some private land and a guys house a few hundred yards back, we didn't wanna shoot in that direction though. They were mostly flying too so an air gun would be a no go. Plus thats no fun. Dove is alright I guess, was kinda disappointed with it I heard it was tasty it was just so so. Chicken-y tasting at first then it had a weird gamey taste.

CLD - I wasn't suggesting you should use air guns, what I meant was that you might benefit from using the same tactics I use...;)
But from your most resent post it seems obvious it'd be difficult to change angle of fire, so my best advice would be to change location, preferably to a spot further away from inhabited areas (duh) but still under their flight path...
Statistically speaking it should be better to take them while inbound than outbound because they'll be oriented with head and vital organs towards you so there'd be less of a chance of you just winging them or not penetrating deep enough...

But what do I know, I never use scatterguns...

Well this is a popular hunting spot for dove in my area (live in a hick town) and theres always a huge clusterfuck of dove in the area all the time so its the best place to be, its a real slaughter. But it doesnt matter if they're coming or going when you're shooting #9 birdshot though really. Winging could happen either way, but you wouldnt have to worry about it not penetrating enough I wouldn't think. But its irrelevant I probably wont do much more dove hunting in the future, not a fan of their meat.
