Since my post got om nom nom'ed by the server, I'll recap what I had typed late last night.
Radio has 3 parts: Source, Transmitter, Antenna
Source: CD deck, microphones, satellite downlink (C-Band big ugly dish), basically whats on the air. You'd have a mixer or control board to control on/off and volume, and multiple source switching.
STL and Transmitter: STL is Studio to Transmitter Link. We used 2 different 1 watt (or so) microwave units to talk to both of our tower/transmitter sites. We also had some 1 watt UHF radio backups that could be used as STL or as emergency main transmitters. We also had a truck mounted microwave unit used for remotes. For the most part, if you're not operating a commercial outfit, you'll be directly connected to your XMTR (FCC talk for Transmitter). Transmitters, unless you are a genius, can be purchased from eBay from HAM's or from stations that shut down. Our AM Transmitter was 1,000 watts, and the FM was 5,000 watts. Some of the big timers have 50,000 or even 100,000+ watts ERP (Effective Radiated Power).
Antenna: This can be as simple as a Rat Shack HAM antenna, or a 2000' tall monstrosity. These should be purchased as well, as they need to be tuned professionally to broadcast the right frequency and modulation, along with your transmitters being tuned right. Most professional transmitters aren't tube and crystal these days, it's all solid state. If you ever find a tube and crystal transmitter, look on the crystals for any markings that indicate 640 kHz or 1240 kHz (CONELRAD).

Guerilla radio is a boon for those with less than desirable political views. They can speak their minds without the mindless censorship of commercial radio!

Pirate radio is a way to get a message out to a broad audience without censorship.
Or at least it was, until the radio died.
