Chicago, IL - The death of a 90-year-old man found duct-taped to a chair in his south suburban home has been ruled a homicide by the Cook County medical examiner's office.
Steger Police were called to check on Joseph Basile Saturday after neighbors found him duct-taped to a recliner, Police Chief Richard Stultz said.
A dog leash used to restrain the man also was found in the home, and officers at the scene saw bruises on Basile's arms, police said.
A neighbor discovered the conditions after a caregiver staying with Basile asked her to come over and stay with him. Basile was taken to St. James Hospital and Health Centers in Chicago Heights, where he died Tuesday.
The family told police they had restrained him because Basile, who also suffered from dementia, tried to get up and move around, which resulted in his falling and hurting himself.
Remind me not to use these caregivers for any of my elderly relatives. Duct tape a 90 year old to a chair and use a dog leash on him because he likes to wander around??? And I'm sure Medicaid/Medicare was paying big bucks for this service too. What a joke!
