since they kind of inexplicably hated him, wouldn't they want him to go away? i just don't understand why when the letters came for him, they kept trying to keep them from him. THEY DONT FUCKING LIKE HARRY. to me, it seems like him going away would be a welcome blessing.

i think its because the aunts sister used to come back and show off, and the aunt actually wanted to be a wizard, so she was fully of jealousy and hate because she didn't have the magic gene or what ever and it rubbed off on her husband, so they did it out of spite

Fantasy books for little kiddies are only supposed to make sense to little kiddies and to make the author bulk cash.

They didn't want harry to go for 2 main reasons.
1. They wanted to distance themselves as far away from magic as possible. They would have to have harry at their house during holidays/vacations so they do not want him to learn magic. It is understood that he would read up/study on the holidays, as he would become interested in magic.
2. They hated harry and try to make his life as boring as possible. They try to stop him going to hogwarts so he can't have any fun. Sadistic fucks....

^ i can understand the first point, maybe...
but the second? is there ever a reason given for them treating harry like a piece of shit? if they really didn't want him, they could've just put him in an orphanage or threw him in the river...though i'm sure buttfuckaldore would've came and scooped him up and brought him back.

Remember the school they were going to send him to? It was called St. Bartleby's or something like that, they would rather have him sent there were they believed in physical punishment.

They didnt send him away because they swore to dumbledore that he would always have a home at there place until he became of age because of the whole hiding thing. so they were bound by there word to give him a home but to not be nice to him...

Yes, basically they had to have him in their house, due to petunias protection, but vernon really hated him. Vernon frowns upon lily potter, for example in some instances when petunia/harry brings her up. Remember the time the howler came for petunia, telling her sommit like "Remember my last" from bumblebore.

The only parts of the Harry Potter books/movies I even really liked were the first chapter(s) set at his aunt and uncle's house. I remember one of the books not even having a scene like that, and so that's when I stopped reading the series. JK Rowling screwed me over, that whore.
Synopsis: Rocks fall, everyone dies.

i don't remember that. i know it wasn't in the movie..but it's been years since i've read the book. this was in the first book then?
but then that contradicts why they wouldn't want him to go away to hogwarts. he's of age now, kick his ass out. you know?
and they were going to send him to the public high school. his cousin got to go to the private one his uncle went to.
i just find the whole interactions between harry and that family as really rather juvenile and unrealistic. yeah i know the books are filled with magic shit, but the idea is this actually takes place in the real world, under our noses, so the tone of the book is supposed to be believable in a sense. having wicked aunt and uncle raise him...is kind of dumb. they treat him too much like shit, and yet want him to stay there when he could leave for hogwarts.

The reason they didn't want him to go to Hogwarts is because he came to them from Hogwarts in the first place. See, he used to live with his mother in Hogwarts, chilling out maxing relaxing all cool and all shooting some b-ball outside after school when a couple of guys they were up to no good started making trouble in his neighbourhood he got in one little fight and his mom got scared and said you're moving with your auntie and uncle in the middle of nowhere so he whistled for a cab and when it got near the license plate said fresh and it had dice in the mirror if anything he could say that the cab was rare but well the rest is not important anyway.
I think that's the main reason.

The uncle hates anything outwith "the norm", a prime example being magic. Anyone with other beliefs or activities that threaten how he thinks (or wants to think).
The aunt was jealous of her sister (Harry's mother) and takes that out on Harry, what with him being the only direct descendant available.
I think they do love him, on a very deep instinctive level. When he leaves them (probably forever) near the end of the series, things are awkward but not hateful. On another level, they are just bitter and afraid for their own reasons.
I wonder if the aunt married the uncle because he favours the norm - she wants the exact opposite - as she interprets - of what is the cause of unhappiness in earlier life, e.g. being the "unsuccessful" muggle while her sister discovers her fantastic powers.
The treating him like shit is also an act that they see to be in Harry's favour. I don't recall the exact words (sorry, you quote-nazis), but they wanted to "stamp the magic out of him" so he could live a normal, "respectable", life.
Another thing I wonder about is whether the aunt's spoiling of her biological son, Dudley, while treating Harry like shit on her shoe, is partly a way of getting back at her dead sister because of whom she was made to feel second best.

They were going to send him to regular public school. They just told Aunt Marge they were sending him away to explain why he was gone most of the year.

you're all idiots. the reason they didn't want him to go to the wizard boarding school is cause they had already signed him up for another boarding school anyway. they didn't have to be around him, and he'd be miserable as fuck there, sounded like a shitty school, so they obviously already had taken care of the problem of him bein around all the time.
god damn do you all have the info retention of squirrels or whaaa??
the magic haters didnt want the kids learnin about magic..durrrrrrr.

Truth.
They were terrified of magic, hated Harry and had mistreated him his whole life.
Why then, would they send him to a school that would give him the tools he needs to come back and kick their miserable asses?
