Tell us about it
ME: Spent a month in Bolivia. La Paz and Santa Cruz. Santa Cruz is da shit = tropical savanna, 1.5 million people (biggest city in Bolivia), very modern, very not-western, not on most maps of South America, fucking frontier town a'la Oregon Trail, but on the upper edge of the amazon.
The exchange rate made the entire trip awesome: $1USD=$7 bolivanos.
But the coolest part?
Going to El Alto (THE GHETTO) @ night with some local high school girls a fellow traveler knew via their mom. Fucking trippy. Throngs of people. Che statue 70 ft tall made of scrap metal (pic below, imagine at night). Vodka sold by the 2 gallon jerry can. Poor people galore. Venders selling everything under the sun. Saw some 18YO dudes pull purses they had just snatched outta their belt lines. Police? LOL, no one trusts the police in Bolivia. School buses decked out in Bolivian voodoo shit. $1USD cab rides across the city (and that's the tourist price).
What did I do there? (in El Alto, the 'hood) Buy a hat and eat a meal of fried chicken, fries and Coca Cola. Scared shitless, eatin chicken in the hood of Bolivia - that was the coolest thing I did in 2010.
