The RIRA soldiers may be many things (psychotic scumbags being only one) but 'cowards' they aren't. Attacking soldiers who have armed guards at a military base in the middle of a police state isn't the act of a coward...a mad man maybe or better a fanatic.
I assume Health And Safety rules forbade the armed civilian guards from returning fire?
What did you expect? When the Chief Constable Of NI goes on air announcing he is bringing in undercover Army Intelligence Units (for which read brit secret army kill teams) it was clear that the more psychotic would see attack as the best form of defence.
So stop grizzling and whining about how our "brave boys were murdered by cowards". Our brave boys were soldiers. Soldiers get killed by other soldiers, that's war and make no mistake the RIRA believe they are at war.
