As for the whole "SP is getting worse" thing, I thinks that's more related to an individual's history of watching the show. It starts to get old. Still, I think they're still being quite creative, and the show certainly hasn't gone to shit like the Simpsons or Family Guy.

I think I definitely noticed a stylistic change starting in Season 11, and then becoming strong in Season 12. It's hard to describe, but...I'm finding the episodes feel kind of shallow. They make their parodies the main event, instead of just a peripheral thing that enhances the story, and I sort of feel that the show is too polished. For instance, starting with Season 11, they started to make Cartman's antics seem so blatant and self-aware, if that makes sense. Like I said, it's hard to describe, but basically I felt like Cartman from Season 10 and earlier seemed more "real", and now everything he does seems so scripted and fake. (I mean, it IS scripted, but it never felt like that before)

I do think fans have got a bit carried away in their expectations for a great episode every week, but I think the creators have got the show back on track with original material. After watching it a second time, I wondered the same thing. I eventually decided that he was probably just referring to their "test". It doesn't make as much sense, but it would have made even less sense to make an obvious statement about the test, so I just let it go.


Anyway, overall I thought it was a pretty damn good episode. Like someone else mentioned, it wasn't a plain-as-day spoof, and it wasn't that preachy, which is great. A message was still there, but South Park is almost always that way. The difference is that they used to do it without being so damn obvious, and they didn't often have whole episodes dedicated to pop culture references.

I've been happy with South Park since the old days, but I've still always hoped that they'd go back to their early style. It probably won't happen, but I can hope.

The last one wasn't very entertaining at all. As PizzaNazi said, it was just bad writing. Or perhaps lazy writing. I was waiting for the plot to go somewhere... but it went nowhere. Nowhere entertaining, at least. There definitely were funny moments though.

Watch it again and I think you'll notice. It had a lack of consistency and internal logic. Like, the aliens shot people and decimated buildings during a test? The McGeezax guy was supposed to get stabbed in the neck (ie. he had a bandage)? The cops were talking to themselves about how the planet seemed strange?

I mean, I wasn't TRYING to be picky about it or anything, but that stuff stuck out the second time I watched it. I don't care about plot-holes in South Park, but these seemed like weak writing instead of intentional choices.

Problems: I think this might have beenbetter suited to be a two-parter, given the whole "adventure" thing; the jokes were a bit sparse or repetitive, and it also fell apart at the end. They wasted the last 2-3 minutes on this retardedly obvious message about "Why would Americans want to be pirates?", as though anyone seriously wants to be a poor Somali pirate.

Still, the concept on its own was pretty hilarious, and it didn't have that lifeless, one-note parody feel of The Coon.

But, yes, it's awesome that South Park can be so topical... especially in comparison to Family Guy. They put out a "new" episode about fucking OJ a couple weeks ago :facepalm:.

What do you mean, about the show losing its "social and political sense of humor" last season? It had plenty. Like the episode where Kenny does the cat piss thing, it showed the parents of South Park freaking out over drug use among children, and they even outlawed cats. Some grade-A social commentary. The episode where the internet goes down was clearly making fun of our dependence on the internet. And wtf? How can you forget the episode that aired the day after the US Presidential election? The McCain supporters were fucking building an ark to survive the "upcoming catastrophe", while the Obama supporters were shown partying, because they expected some great change to the country, which really never came.

So there was a good amount of political/social commentary last season, though I think they tend to overdo it. My favorite episode last season was the one where the class takes a trip to that uh.. what are they called? Like, old fashioned villages with people working there that do not use modern conveniences/technology. It was so great because they never broke character, and all the crazy shit with the thieves was happening. A hostage situation, people dying, and then these actors still refusing to break character- except for the one guy, who was shot and killed by his boss for doing so. THAT is comedy, heh.

What's so great about episodes that poke fun at politics and society? It seems like a cop-out for the writers in some episodes. I mean, pointing out ignorance, stupidity, double standards and unfairness in politics/society is one of the easiest things to do. Do you really need South Park to highlight the hypocrisy for you?

Now, about Butters.. what do you mean here? He is a VERY popular character, and is widely considered one of the funniest. He's been the main character in a few episodes, which is more than any of the other non-Eric/Stan/Kyle/Kenny characters have had. He was even "The Chosen One" or whatever in the Imaginationland trilogy.

I, too, love Butters. He really is great. Most of what makes him great, I think, is his timid personality. In the latest episode, he spent most of his time acting like a confident pimp, which I feel lessened the funny associated with Butters. The thing with the cop was funny the first time, then they just re-used the joke over and over. In my opinion, the funniest part of the episode was the ACORN thing, with Butters providing his workers with all of those benefits. Which is kind of disappointing, because it wasn't THAT funny anyway.

It was easily the worst episode of the season so far.

'Twas hilarious, you daft? Me and a friend who's very much into the animal rights movement had a great laugh over the whole thing. The screaming Japanese mobs had me braying like a giddy donkey :D

Haha okay I thought i it was going to be more than that, maybe like two seasons or three. Looks like i got some watching to do. What were some real good episodes between 12.5 and 13.5?

That's 12-8 and 13-8, to be precise. (ie. The halfway mark of the seasons)

That was what I consider to be their worst block of episodes in the entire series' run, to be honest. There are some good moments in some episodes, but most were pretty lame. The second half of season 13, which is airing now, has been consistently good though.

I also liked Pinewood Derby even though it has a lot of plot holes/was obviously made at the last minute. It's a Randy Marsh episode, and has aliens, so yeah. Awesome combination.
