View Full Version : Where to buy equipment?

I'm not looking for chemical sources.

Maybe this should be added to the resource thread, but some websites that have good deals on glass beakers, hot plates, ect would be help for us new chemists

A lot of this equipment is expensive, saving a few bucks here and there can really add up

1. Go to headshop. Ask the guy behind the counter "do you have any business cards or other contact for local glassblowers? I'm shopping to commission a piece."

This is cool, because you can get scientific equipment that doesn't exist yet.

...or...

2. When you are done eating pickles, you must save the jar.

I'm a firm believer that every aspiring chemist should learn how to work with untreated glass so they don't mistreat the good stuff, anyway...

Website sources of ANY kind are not appreciated.

Thanks.

In this thread, you will find a site which will send you free beakers, flasks, and accessories, for just a name and address.

Use olive jars like JP said. You can add some taps, etc to the lid and use them for, say, a chlorine gas generator, or maybe hydrogen if your so inclined to.

I've seen some alcohol bottles that look exactly like a flat-bottomed round flask(forgot the other name, Erlenmeyer?)

Be creative, you dont have to spend heaps for some good equipment which is still usable for 70% of what someone at home would use it for anyway. Just avoid thin glass, stuff which feels rotten(if you know what i mean), etc.

EDIT: State, I don't see anything wrong with posting equipment sources as suppliers to the best of my knowledge cannot be held liable if you happen to use their flasks and whatnot for naughty things. If you feel otherwise though, feel free to edit these out.

Um, unless you guys saw something I didn't, all that Corning stuff was for molecular biology work. The size of the flasks range from tiny to super-tiny and I didn't even see beakers.

I'd love to be wrong about that, though. So, if I just missed something, let me know. :D

Plenty of beakers in decent sizes, just plastic ones ..

Are you talking about on the site generally, or for the free samples specifically?

On the site, just look in the produst list and you will see beakers and flasks (they are on maybe the 2nd or 3rd page IIRC)

If you mean in the free samples, I couldn't find a list of what they would send out - is there one?

I meant in the free samples. To view the list, open the link and click the box labeled "I would like to order FREE samples," the bottom-most option.

225cm² Flasks(5)
oops seems like I didn't notice it was cm squared not cubed .. so no idea what the volume will be :D lawl .. though if that's the inside surface area then the larger ones should be a half decent volume ..
However they do have decent sized Erlenmeyer flasks ...

Florence flasks.

I like Patròn bottles. From 50mL to 1.75L, plus they have that nice little lip for pouring and come with a cork stopper. Cork is pretty unreactive, i believe, and the bottoms can be treated/covered.

Sweet mother of Jesus, this is even more sweet than the free sterile filtration kit and pipettes that I sampled from FisherScientific + plus a fuck ton of catalogs (no kidding, shipping cost them over 250$ :P ).

Damn I love free samples and big companies that hand them out.

Now, lets see if I'm able to sample some glass/plastic ware from corning and lets hope that this source wont get abused to shit in 1, 2, 3, of fuck, too late.

I got 4 of the 850cm roller bottles. They are plastic and 2000ml each, nice. I also got 6 100ml cell culture flasks and 5 600ml cell culture flasks, probably going to use the small ones for measuring and the big ones to store solvents.

Hmm maybe I'll try growing bioluminescent algae

the big ones to store solvents.

If they are plastic, you may want to reconsider.

I know, but most of mine are otc and not that high purity. I barely use solvents anyway.

call/email your local university, or closest college. chemistry dept is a good start, agriculture and biology are good, too. i managed to score a HUGE box of glassware, probably five to ten beakers, flasks, grad cylinders (each) and a funnel. glass. just act formal....

InspiredByMe have you recived your loot, or have you just ordered them?
And also, I tought that the culture bottles ware ones with a shitty large surface area matrix inside).
I submitted a quite large order. They offered 12x 2l polycarbonate bottles and ware ready to part with some various sizes of plastic erlenmeyers (125ml to 1l).
And some other stuff too.

I got all my stuff. But I ordered some more stuff, erlenmeyer flasks and more bottles.
On the bottom of this (http://catalog2.corning.com/Lifesciences/en-US/Shopping/Product.aspx?categoryname=Cell+Culture+and+Bioproc ess(Lifesciences)%7cFlasks%2c+Culture%2c+Plastic+( Lifesciences)%7c225cm²+Flasks(Lifesciences)) page is what I got, with graduations up the sides. The small ones are the same except cap on the side and they hold, I'm guessing, about 100ml or more.

Hmm mouse brain cells, nah I'll stick with the algae.

No but I only ordered 5 large cell culture flasks, 6 small cell culture flasks and 4 2l bottles. Just don't over do it.

But I placed another order 4 days after I got my first :D

Now I get to brag... i unloaded and separated all my glassware. Keep pile, and stash in the basement pile. i got this by contacting the head of the chemistry department at my locan uni, he referred me to the agriculture department.
