I am looking into purchasing an external hard drive, and I think this might be a great option. What brands/models do you guys suggest? I would like around 1 Terabyte for under or close to $500. The cheaper the better.

I just have a few questions about these. I would just plug it into my router, correct? Would it show up as another drive G: or H: for example?

And is there a way to use this as a database, for example to access it over the internet from anywhere? How would I do this?

What transfer rates are you guys getting with these?

Thought about making a cheap ass computer out of intels mini itx board? I would consider it, I assume you might be able to make 2gb with $500.00

i.e. (in pounds assuming the exchange rate was still 2:1)

mobo and processor board £50
2gb ddr ram £20
Case and PSU £60
Hard drives (2 1tb samsungs) £67 each

and some other shit and their you have it

p.s. windows xp or something, free

Hmm. inetersting, But I really dont know how to use all that and how to host something on it.

What I want to do is have this be accessible anywhere there is interet, so for example I can access my movie collection at a friend's house, access my personal documents from work ect. that type of stuff.

What is this called?

I purchased a 1TB external hard drive for only $140 a few months ago, and I love it. I've got ~550 episodes of TV shows and movies, as well as ~100 gigs of rainbow tables for cracking MD5, and it's like 1/4 full. let me see if I can dig up a link...

Cool, it's even cheaper now!

I really can't recommend this drive enough... It's great. It's not network storage, but you should be able to set it up so it's accessible from anywhere via the internet.

That's a great tutorial that walks you through step by step. Just make sure to specify the proper drive while setting it up.

Building/buying a small cheap PC and making it have 1tb drives (but not built by hitachi whatever you do) and then just use terminal services and I assume the data will be accessible from anywhere (evena suitable pds/smartphone).

I was looking at some cheap barebones kits from tigerdirect. It seems like I can set this up for around $250-300.

After It is setup, I would have to purchase a domain name and host it on my new server correct?

I am confused at this part, I don't know much about this stuff.

Zok posted a guide on having an internet server from your home I believe, but it sounded like it could be free.

edit: post links to these kits please, at one poinnt i was thinking of making a miniitx hotswappable NAS/server box.

Western digital is good, though not as good as my beloved samsung spinpoint drives.

I'd go for the intel one, though the case is fugly.

Edit I also would not count on upgradability. It's got just two sata ports and no support for 45nm dual core chips.

I'm not really looking too much into them right now, I just posted a few to give you an idea of what they are like.

I don't think I would need any expandability at all though. It will only be used as a server.

Now, after that is all set up, what comes next, buying a domain, hosting?? I don't know how this website stuff works at all.

Nor do I, I'm not really software, mroe hardware. I know their are some custom linux nas distros, but they are not really meant for online server configs. By the way, what is the reasoning. If you want to share files between friends have you considered MS groove? it is pretty bitching.

I dont think groove is what I am looking for. By the looks of it, It has to be installed on every computer that you want to access the information from.
