What? First off, I'm pretty sure every ISP in Australia is against it. All that could possibly do is make our internet worse than it is now.

I just noticed that I didn't make a second point, and I started my only one with "first off". Ignore that.

Surely there's a means for the population to vote this thing down, isn't there?

Write to the Liberal Party/National Party/Greens senators that represent your state and it'll die in the senate.
If the Coalition and Greens both oppose it, it's history.

I can't believe that this is an issue that came up in a first world democracy. What the fuck is wrong with the religious right? And why the fuck haven't you Aussies done anything to this guy for even SUGGESTING this?

This here, it was never going to come to fruitition in the first place.
P.S. Rudd wasn't the cocksmear that proposed it.

1) Because he's better than the last guy, who lied, cheated, stole, as well as basically cut the nations engines in mid-air. At least Rudd just makes promises and doesn't act on them.
2) We don't have any real politcal parties that are either left or right wing in Australia. There were some minor ones, which have mostly dissolved due to lack of support, and then there's the Nationals who have what, 1 seat? The Nationals aren't that bad though, far more tame than what you have in the USA in even the main political parties there.

1) Someone supporting censorship isn't any better than someone who lies, cheats, steals, etc.
2) I didn't say anything about political parties, and at least our fucking internet wont be censored.

My mistake, I thought that when you wrote the emboldened text below, you were referring to political parties.

I don't think the legislation has been passed yet (or will be passed), and even then, isn't the system supposed to be opt-out, making it mandatory for ISPs to provide a filtering service, not for end-users to receive filtration?

I'm getting sick of Rudds bullshit. This whole thing is a move aimed to appease senator Steve Fielding (Leader of the Family First party who is, along with independent Nick Xenophon needed to pass things through Senate for labor.)
So Because the shitty Rudd government wasn't able to get enough seats in the senate, Australia will have to be held ransom to a crazy Religious senator, a power hungry independent, and the green party who want us all to adopt trees.
Anyone who thinks this is about Child Porn is stupid. The filter has been extended to all "illegal material". That can mean: euthanasia, File sharing, Drug Culture and more.
Something I found interesting is that on a press release some official said it will include "filesharing such as bittorent" I download Linux from bittorrent.
The filter is said to slow down the internet by 22-86 % -not a typo, which is statistically meaningless. They are Testing the filter in a closed environment and frankly they will implement it nationwide, because 90% of people are apathetic.
From a Technical standpoint, The filter is useless. Unless they block every proxy its another one of Rudds symbolic gestures
but anyway use Tor, they cant block it.

i read in a newspaper that the bill hasnt been passed yet, but 5 ISPs ( we dont know which ones) are willing to give it a trial run or something (possibly to prove how retarded the idea is). if i recall, telstra is definitely not one of them.

They probably can block proxies systematically if they're clever, but they will never be able to do a damn thing about SSH tunneling.

Am I the alone in thinking that internet censorship is just as bad, if not worse then book-burning?
I think its a disgusting act of anti-intellectualism.

I didn't look at it as book burning, but it could go down that road. They could start adding whatever they want to the "illegal" list.

1) What did Howard steal? I'm down on the whole lie thing but I wasn't under the impression that furniture was found to be missing from Kirribilli.
2)
The nationals have 9 seats in the House of Reps, and 4 senators, along with significant representation in the NSW, Victorian, and Western Australian Parliaments. (Plus one member in South Australia who's a minister in the Labor government). Not to mention the fact that the formation of the "Liberal National Party" in Queensland essentially amounted to the National Party swallowing the Liberals whole.
You say there's not much left or right- I'm sorry, but the Greens are left wing and haven't 'dissolved due to lack of support'.
Everyone knows Labor are slimy Blairite garbage, but just because Labor isn't left wing doesn't mean there isn't any sort of Australian political spectrum.
Also, the only two parties that achieved representation which have gone the way of the dodo in recent memory are the democrats and one nation. (If you want to be technical we can count the 'progressive alliance' meg lees tried to start up after leaving the Democrats).
The demise of the democrats mirrors the rise of the Greens, and one Nation only got one Senator up anyway (though they did better in that one Queensland state election). Since then Steve Fielding got up for Family First.
At this moment, there are 5 parties and an independent in the senate.
Yes Liberals and Labor dominate, but it's absurd to claim that there aren't any minor parties.

It is nation wide. There is no opting out of it all together but you can get taken down to a filter that allows porn and such, but it still blocks anything that the guy behind a desk in an office somewhere decides it is better if you don't know.
Rudd is a major disapointment for me, I was barracking for him.
I thought of them as a joke and still do really but the Australian SEX Party is getting more support every day. NUDITY IS A RIGHT!!!. heh.

If killing politicians became legal, Rudd would be a prime candidate. And whoever takes over after him and doesn't instantly revoke the law, another prime candidate.
However, that isn't going to happen, because Australian's throughout the beginning of white settlement have been widely known for their conformity and ability to live within the law. They don't glorify criminality at all, with people like Chopper and the postcard bandit.
Yeah, the politicians have nothing to worry about.

Vote me in?
ISP filtering is BS, cause it only takes a few minutes to set up another server with a different name and shit keeps rolling again.
