Do Americans misunderstand the Founding Fathers?

By David McCullough - Historian / Author

Well sad to say we are raising and have been raising for about 25 years one generation after another of young Americans who are by and large historically illiterate. Now it isn’t their faults we can’t blame young people in high school or college for not knowing what they haven't been taught. It’s the fault of their parents follow lot of us, teachers-parents and the culture.

History is of the utmost importance, I think its probably more important than any other one single subject because its about the human experience, its about life and consequences of ones actions and its about the role of personality of character in events passed, and we can learn from it, we can learn infinite number of lessons from history and we can also take strength from it, we could be guided by in our own performance, in our own contributions, by the examples of those who went before us and the founders alas have been rather forgotten in part I think because they appear in no photographs...

What the hell does that mean?

I don't really have an idea of what the Founding Fathers would think about modern America, and i think its kind of stupid when someone says "well, the founding fathers would say this" about abortion or the war in iraq or whatever because nobody has any idea what they would think. We have very little idea about what these people were like, personally.

But as for this book, i really like McCullough and i'll probably read it.

I think history is the worst of all subjects. It is largely made up and subject to narrative fallacy.

Fact: Most Americans can't name more than 2 of the founding fathers

Any worse than narrative fallacy about the present?

Should we then ignore the present too?

Cool. *Calls for another round of Oxy for everyone!*

free speech was founded in the purpose of political discussion....not solely on the purpose of free will. The idea was to quicken the process of democratic deliberation to ensure greater attention to public issues and different diversities of views in a short period of time.
