on the fan leaves, why do people cut off the tips off?

Because they get yellow, and thats bad for the plant, so they trim them before they sell them

Are you fucking kidding me? Please stop giving advice when you are completely ignorant on the topic.
They might trim off yellow parts before they sell them, but if they do its purely for aesthetic reasons. Leaving yellow leaves on the plant does not hurt it. Quite the contrary. When a leave dies, as many do as the plant gets bigger and goes into flowering, the plant sucks what nutrients it can out from the leaves. The process leaves them yellow, and eventually they will fall off, or be able to be removed with a very light tug. When that happens, the plant has taken all the available nutrients out of the leaf.
The point being, yellow leaves happen and they are not bad for the plant. However if you have a ton of yellow leaves, it is indicative of a greater problem, and cutting off the yellow would be pointless anyways. Oh, and they don't trim fan leaves because of yellow leaves. That was complete bullshit spewed from charles mansons ignorant mouth.
OP, I've never seen a clone that had its fan leaves trimmed. But the theory behind it is simple. Trimming the fan leaves stunts the leaf growth. They won't get any bigger. This means the plant uses all its energy to focus on root development, which is crucial for a clone.
I would never do that because my cloning method is better in the first place. I make a few slits with a razor on the plant, wrap in rockwool dipped in rooting hormone. Then wrap that in tin foil to make sure it stays moist. Wait a week. Then when you cut your clone off, it already has a rooted base.
Oh, and wrong forum bro.

Moving this thread to Seed to Smoke so hopefully you wont get anymore shit advice from retards like Charles.
The Greek gave you some excellent information though.

I trim everything except the top level of leaves, and cut those back, because well, honestly because that's how cervantes says to do it and it's always worked well.
I was watching Super High me the other day though, and noticed that when he was at oaksterdam they were taking much, much bigger clones than i normally do (like 8-10 inch tall cuttings) and not trimming the leaves. <shrug>
oh...my little experiment with revegging clones that came from a plant already showing flower failed miserably, 4/5 no roots at all, the one that did root hasn't had any new growth in about a week.

Did you do it in traditional fashion or did you use the rockwool method?
For a plant in flowering I'd imagine the rockwool method would work a whole lot better.

traditional, since i'm going straight to flower as soon as they root the branches are pretty thin, i didn't think they'd support the weight of a wet cube.

No, no, no, and no. People trim the tips off of cuttings because it corrects the energy offset from requiring a large leaf surface area to support a large plant structure, and then reducing the plant structure significantly (taking a cutting). Cuttings no longer needs as much leaf surface area to provide the necessary energy for the plant, so leaving unnecessary leaf makes the cutting just waist energy being required to maintain it.
Its all about optimizing the utilization of biological energy.

yeah that. That sounds like the explanation i was groping toward while sucking the vape earlier.
But can you explain the giant cutting thing i keep seeing in documentaries and shit?

i was watching super high me last week and the guy was at oaksterdam, they're taking cuttings that are like a foot long, 3 or 4 sets of leaves, not trimming the leaves and just sticking them in a cube.
then supposedly 5 days later they've rooted through the cube. big cubes, the 5 inch ones with like 6 clones to a cube.
