If you only read one book on metaphysics or comparative religion, make it The Perennial Philosophy by Aldous Huxley. It is deep, vast, rich, and demanding.
Among modern writers, Deepak Chopra is without a doubt numero uno--if you want a relatively easy intro, see Power, Freedom and Grace. If you want a challenge, read How to Find God.

Hop on Pop- Dr Seuss.
As a hardcore rationalist, I'd recommend some Robert Anton Wilson. Prometheus Rising specifically. It's good brain-sturbation, and shows you that you're not hurting the logic gods by exploring the unknown, the non-empirical a bit.

These two links are short stories meant that will stimulate your mind. They're not answers, they're an end all, but they introduce themes that occur in all mythologies and they are worth taking a look at.
