There's a really cute puppy that's been hanging around across the street from my house for the past couple of weeks. He and another dog, which I think is his mom, obviously think that the people across the street are their owners, but the people don't do shit for them. I just watched them come out and water the plants, and they didn't even give the poor dogs any water.
The mom has really bad mange, and the puppy is wormy, but I'm pretty sure I can at least find a home for the puppy. I'm going to take the mom to the shelter on Monday, even though she'll probably end up getting put to sleep. :( Better than getting hit by a car or starving to death, though.
Anyway, I just posted an ad for the puppy on craiglist. He's cute as fuck, and I've already had 2 people email me about him since I posted the ad 3 hours ago. I'm sure I'll have more by tomorrow.
How do I pick the best home? This (http://www.pitbull-chat.com/showthread.php?t=1877) scares she shit out of me. I could never forgive myself if something like that happened to him. I normally do myspace searches for the people that I'm considering adopting to, in order to get an idea of their personality. I also google their email address and see what comes up. I didn't get anything from either one of the people who have emailed me so far, though.
Let them know that the puppy comes from an abusive home and that there may be personal check ups on your part.

Damn, hard to say, it looks like you've already done what you could to find out who these people are...
If you can't find their email addys on another forum, try whatever usernames might be connected to them, data-mining takes time...
Sorry, but that's all I've got, if all you have to go on is an email address, I'd say you should go by your gut instinct.
Good luck!
Always, always, always tell anyone you're selling or adopting to that you will be checking up on the animal. And follow through on it atleast once. It's the only reasonably safe way to go about adoptions. Also, tell them you'll need to see their home and make sure it's puppy-safe. It seems a bit invasive, but when it comes to an animal's happiness, health and safety, you can't be too careful or picky.

Thanks for the advice. I changed my ad to say that I'll meet the person at the vet, and that the dog will officially be theirs once they get it's shots and everything done. Now all of the sudden there's no emails coming in. Great.

Meeting them is a good idea. I would try to meet them before the vet though. Someone came to look at my dog (my mom left up the ad for her after she promised me we were keeping her. as soon as the call came she was all for letting the lady come and look at her:rolleyes:) and even had they not decided they weren't going to take her i wasn't going to let Stella anywhere near her. You can usually tell how good an owner someone will be just by being around them and watching them with the dog for a little while prior. Also, it would be a good idea to ask for a small fee, 20$ or so, to ensure a good home.

And ask for photo i.d. and take down the details. Better to know who they are, that way you can out the real name into the computer and find out more info.

Definitely watching how the person acts around the dog is a good indicator. You can tell right away if the person is really interested by if they're totally smitten with the puppies cuteness, or if they're looking for things like breeding qualities or obedience right away. Ask them why they want a dog and if they've had dogs or other pets in the past. Good luck, I'm sure you'll find a great home for him.

The fuckers across the street saw me messing with him so they took him in.
This thread is now about how to break into a garage.

Can you tell if he's a purebred, or a mix of a specific breed? There are breed specific rescues across the country that do a really good job of providing foster homes until the dogs get adopted.

So you have to steal the dog first, this is a whole new can of worms.
Before going all out with the night op shit, have you considered leveling with the owners? If they just wake up one day with no dog they're just going to get a new one. And then you're going to have to commit to a life of stealing dogs. Perhaps going all SPCA on their asses might be a better idea.

Or, if the dogs are pretty sick (you mentioned the puppy having worms) and the owners aren't doing anything to take care of them, maybe you could call animal control? I think you should talk to them first, like xxombie said, but it if comes down to it, and the dogs should not be left with those people, there are ways to get them away legally.

I fucking hate people. The dog is back outside now, but when they saw him run across the street to see me when I got home yesterday, they tried to call it over and act like they cared about it. Of course, the dog ignored them since I actually give it attention. I don't know what to do now.
I've called animal control at least 4 or 5 times about all the stray dogs on my street, but they never do anything. My boyfriend even called from his phone because he thought that they were just ignoring my request since I call so much, but they still don't show up.
