I understand the argument being made, but I was hoping that re-stating it without a bunch of buzzwords might expose how ridiculous it actually is: "we should be allowed to post people's info if we can find it." People complain of the myriad ways we're supposedly driving users away from the site, but I can't even imagine what kind of exodus we'd be seeing if we just threw up our hands and said "yeah, go ahead and post people's personal information with impunity."

YES - people should be careful of what they post, and where. If you don't want your name, phone number, etc. available to those that will publicize it or abuse it, you should do what you can to keep it away from prying eyes. But it doesn't follow that failure to do so equals permission for others to do as they please with that information. If I park my car along the street with the doors open and the keys in the ignition, I'm certainly inviting theft...but it similarly doesn't follow that taking my car shouldn't still be a crime.

Most information about most people is available to someone who looks hard enough. Phone numbers and addresses are generally considered "public" information, and hackers in the 80's showed how easy it is to just call up a company or organization, pretend to be legit, and pretty much get the person on the other end of the line to tell them whatever they want. Here in Japan, there's been a slew of crimes where a person with an official looking business card and nametag will show up at a person's house, pretend to be from the bank, and say "your ATM card has been compromised, so we're going to send you a new one...in the meantime, please give me your old one and tell me the PIN." It's amazing what kind of information you can get about people if you know where to look, or how to ask. But as I said above, it simply doesn't follow that it should then be allowed for people to do those things, or start posting that information. Making yourself an easy target doesn't negate the fact that some things are, and should be, against the rules.

Our stance on personal information is, admittedly, a bit inflexible. But honestly, I don't think there's any legitimate reason for people to be posting others' personal information in the first place. What is the reason then? And I don't know if you saw my thread, but it was entirely optional whether people wanted to contact me there, I left it open. I was asking for a bit of bravery on their part.

People don't want their posts connected to their real identities to avoid conflicts with work, school, family members, police officers, etc. I can't believe I just explained something that should be so obvious (especially to someone who has been here as long as you have).

Also, I have no idea why you were banned, and I don't care. If you had a reasonable complaint, your stupid bitchy OP took away your credibility.

My point was to make you look fucking ridiculous in front of everyone because I had gotten Zok's name from donating to Zoklet a few years ago. His name was also easily available from elsewhere on the internet, and linked to his persona here.

I talked to Wires about it on MSN, she said that she had done it, because Zok was apparently pretty furious at me for doing it. Not furious enough to come and explain himself now apparently, nor do the deed himself in the first place. Don't see why its wires who should be forced to do all the dirty work.

As usual, none of the mods of this site have any fucking clue what is actually the site policy at the time, hence neither do the users, so the users will post something and get banned for it, because the mods are basically making it up as they go along.
