De-mod inactive moderators

This would be a good way to slim down the staff. We have too many mods now, and it shows. There are often disagreements, and moderators fucking around not doing their job.

I propose that we remove any moderator that is not actively modding a forum from their position. Even if they say they are moderating, they have to be checked on. If mods are idle, they need to be removed. There is no reason to have inactive moderators, it slows down the site and creates user disapproval.

Who's for removing slacker, idle, or malicious moderators? If you aren't serving a purpose, get the fuck out.

Could you set up a list saying who is a Mod now and who is an ex-Mod along with the reason they got demodded? It would be an interesting concept that could show users who to go to when they have a problem they need solved along with which users to avoid if a Mod was stripped of their Modship for malicious reasons.

Up until now, i could edit my thread titles after i posted them. It doesn't matter how i did it, it was a right that I valued. Now, I can't do it anymore. And i know exactly why.

Error. He tries to edit the title of one of my threads, and i change it back within minutes. I bragged about doing it in a PM. Obviously i got him pissed, because now, i can't edit my thread titles at all! Do you have any idea how much less enjoyable this made my posting experience?

Especially something like BI, I am really surprised I haven't seen any threads in there by you ranting about 'anarchy' or trying to start a revolution against the 'bourgeois'. A vote isn't necessary for an individual to receive modship. And like I've said before, I keep my politics and my postings in BI separate. BLTC is a completely different forum for BI and even if it isn't new discussion it still does it good if an OP has a question about a drug like acid or mdma and it still promotes active discussion because if the community is willing to answer questions even if they are trivial it will keep new members coming back wanting to learn more. Most people that are 'driven away' are driven away by the shittons of drama on this site which are mostly caused by the mods tbh. People hating the mods really, like when they can't do their job for shit.

SLIM posted info that mainly worked only in the UK and Europe, was copied from other sites, and was often extremely outdated. I'm not going to argue with you on the fact that he was an OK mod, but just because someone's a moderator, it doesn't mean that they throw up new shit every week. The users are the lifeblood of the forum, the good content and discussion ultimately comes from them. Shady, skygear and myself are only three normal, everyday people, we aren't some sort of dynamic trio. Personally, I'm trying to turn BI in the direction of maturity, but it's not that easy, and it isn't going to happen overnight. You can't just go willy-nilly on people as soon as your name is bolded. I've been trying to ease my way in. Change is a gradual process, and I've only been a moderator for about 3 weeks. I've taken the initiative in trying to orient childish bullshit towards the trashcan or the Revenge, Vandalism, and Lulzy Bad Ideas subforum, and keep mature, adult topics on the front page.

On every forum I have been, if you see a very good poster, you are sure he will be the next mod.

And after they are selected to be mods, they still continue to post in the forum they were posting.

you don't need to have access to M&A to know that it's not the job of moderators to look after other moderators. our job role is in the FAQ, you even posted part of it lol. anyway, you can contact one of the admins, though Fish is best as Zok deals mostly with site code and techy stuff, any one of the forum admins (kite--, wires, or AtrainV), or Unwyred who is a global mod.

On topic:

The FAQ sets out one week as a rough guideline of how often we'd like mods to check in on their forums. Obviously, it's set up as a guideline, rather than a hard-set end-all-be-all limit. We're not going to tell a mod "sorry, it's been 8 days!" and remove them if they've never shown to be absentees int he past. However for some forums, like the general forums, once a week is clearly not often enough, while in other forums, there's hardly more than one post a week anyways. How often a mod should be active should be determined by the traffic of the forum.




Short breaks
If you're going to be gone for a couple of days without checking in or anything, you probably won't even need to give us notice unless you're in a particularly busy forum, or if you want your co-mods to know that you'll be out of touch. If your absence will be so brief that nobody will notice, you probably don't need to worry about it.

Longer breaks
If you're planning on being gone for a week or two, you'll want to let us know. Again - just post in the away thread, let us know what's up, and then enjoy your time off! If you're in a busy forum, you may want to either give your co-mods a heads-up via PM as well so that they can either arrange to keep extra vigil or even have another mod help out.

LONG breaks
If you'll be out for more than just a couple of weeks, or even just posting significantly less, please let us know. The away thread is a good place for this, but if you'll be away for a really long time, a separate M&A thread is also okay. Again - in busy forums, we may arrange for a fill-in mod. In extreme cases, you can even step down temporarily while you get your ducks in a line - just let us know when you're ready to come back and we'll put you back!




However, OP (and Blunderful also made the same point here (http://www.zoklet.net/bbs/showthread.php?t=177384)) is certainly correct when they point out that aside from just doing "mod stuff," mods should be posting as well. If a forum has no regular members, a mere trickle of traffic, and a mod who only cleans up spam, that forum is simply going to languish and stagnate. If the forum is painfully slow but has a mod who posts every day or so, and keeps good topics replied to and does more than simply "taking out the trash," that forum certainly has a very strong possibility of being "revived." Perhaps not to the traffic levels of one of the general forums, but certainly even a tiny bit of slow but steady posting from one or two mods is enough to keep members who are interested in that topic checking in once in a while, and hopefully, eventually, posting regularly.

There's no reason that all of that can't be done by a very determined regular. If our mods ONLY cleaned up forums and infracted without ever posting a single word on the forums, there's no reason that the forums couldn't maintain traffic...but that's stupid. Why make someone a mod if the only purpose is to have "somebody, anybody" looking over the forum? Why not make someone a mod of the forum to do that AND also be an enthusiastic and frequent poster.

So to answer the OP, "yes." We're going to need to start clearing out the burned-out, absentee mods, and we need to start putting in active users. Zok already said that we're looking at a new, user-driven system of choosing mods, and I think that between that idea and this one, we need to (and will) hold our mod team to a higher standard of not just "invisible janitors" or "groundskeepers," but people who mod their forums because they give enough of a damn to want to keep it cleared of shit, and because they know enough or care enough about the topic to be worth having as the person who keeps tabs on that forum.
