Megadeth went in a different direction.. which was the non-commercial direction that Matallica didn't take.

haha do some research f00l!
megadeth claimed that exact thing in an interview in the late 80's but if you had followed their career its easy to see that they tried to be better then metallica but just lacked the talent and fan base.

Metallica, in my opinion are better than megadeath.
I'm not saying they definately are, but they're more skilled.
Ride the lightning > megadeath

I'm a Megadeth man, but I love Metallica. Honestly, Metallica's first four albums and large chunks of the black album (and I suppose parts of Death Magnetic, which is growing on me) are fucking classic, but Rust In Piece? Best thrash album ever.

I don't think it would be fair to say Megadeth doesn't have the talent that Metallica does; Metallica became more.. easy listening thrash into the 90's, whereas Megadeth retained the pure thrash sound.

Well, I was always a Metallica fan, but Megadeth is starting to find a place on my MP3 player. Cryptic Writings is my current favourite Megadeth album. Still prefer Metallica though :) Going to see them live in March.

unlike a lot of people it seems, i never really had a love affair with metallica. i always thought of metallica's sound to be average. without a doubt, they have had their moments, but overall, i don't feel i owe any loyalty to them for any reason, and i especially don't feel that the music scene would not be what it is today if it were not for metallica. and as to why people continue to buy their albums is beyond me. metallica is a sinking ship, and they themselves know it. you can tell these guys tried with death magnetic, but it blows, and i suspect this is why james hetfield announced to the audience last i saw them "we know what you guys want to hear, we're not dumb."
megadeth's "in my darkest hour" shows more passion than anything metallica has ever done, and megadeth's "train of consequences" demonstrates elements of musicianship that metallica simply lacks.
lars sucks too.

Everyone knows the correct answer to this question is Metallica's Mechanix.

I prefer Metallica's version of The Mechanix, I really liked James' voice on it, but in general I think that Megadeth are a much better band. I can't stand Load or ReLoad, but Megadeth's Cryptic Writings and Risk are fucking excellent.

Yes, but he got kicked out soon after, but my point is, with Dave the worst of metallica could top the best of megadeath

I'm...confused?
It's like The Four Horsemen, only heavier and the lyrics sound like they are being sung backwards and upside down...?

Mustaine got kicked out before Kill 'Em All was even recorded to memory, the other guys used his songs though.
Metallica< Megadeth.
My brother has all of their albums and I've listened to most of them and they're full of shit. Plus Dave Mustaine is a wanker.

Mustain is a tool, and his vocals are weak compared to james's epic, brutal and passionate masterpiece of a voice. This is a stupid thread, fans of alternative music are smart enough to realise a commercial band when they see one, but yet metallica is still more popular than megadeth. There is a reason for this!

I'm going to pick Metallica on the basis that I've heard every album they've released, but haven't heard as much Megadeth.

I don't know anyone who gets into "Metallica" or "Megadeth" who hasn't just started metal.
I'd say most people who like thrash just go to Death/Black metal or more extreme thrash.
Megadeth's Mechanix, or Metallica's Four Horsemen
It's weird, I knew four horsemen before I knew about megadeth and when i hear the mechanix it was the exact same song except faster.
I do like metallica better only because I'm not a fan of the singer. Guitars are great, such as tornado of souls but the vocals just kill it for me.

I think you're right to a certain extent but sometimes it's nice to think "man, I used to be so into this band when I was 15, and I still love them now", even after they've released two shit albums (which I ignore)

Megadeth did NOT stay in their 'zooperdooper original thrash roots' like all you cunt's seem to think. in fucking 1988 Dave mustain wnt on about how much integrity his band had and how content he was with being a street level band. 4 year's later and he's trying to make mainstream friendly albums that appeal to a wider audience.
So all of you can shut the fuck up about how metallica sold out and Megadeth stuck to their roots, tell that to all the bay area bands that were dumped on their ass by their labels as soon as fucking alternate rock took over the scene.
Both bands had their highs and lows and I think we can all agree that the highs were high and the lows were fucking low.
