View Full Version : Replacement for pencil?

I do oil paintings, and I generally draw out the shape or the figure with paint.
I'd like to use something sharper and more precise, like a pencil. Oil, though, doesn't adhere to pencil, and so the pencil markings show through.
I've also tried charcoal, which doesn't show through the painting, but it's not much better than using the paint itself.
Any ideas?

Maybe you could use some kind of conte pencil?

You could also do a pencil sketch, and then seal it with a clear acrylic sealant and let that dry completely before starting your painting. It will keep the pencil from smudging, and stop any complications you are having with the oil/pencil not wanting to stick together.
Beyond that, I could suggest that you paint with a more thickly pigmented, less oiled down mixture of paint to do your under painting, but I don't know any details of your technique to tell if this is the problem.

Charcoal? Harder type of pencil lead, etc.
But it depends on what you need it for...
