Immediately after the fall of the city, Japanese troops embarked on a determined search for former soldiers, in which thousands of young men were captured. Many were taken to the Yangtze River, where they were machine-gunned. What was probably the single largest massacre of Chinese troops occurred along the banks of the Yangtze River on December 18 in what is called the Straw String Gorge Massacre. Japanese soldiers took most of the morning tying all of the POWs hands together and in the dusk divided them into 4 columns, and opened fire at them. Unable to escape, the POWs could only scream and thrash in desperation. It took an hour for the sounds of death to stop, and even longer for the Japanese to bayonet each individual. Most were dumped into the Yangtze. It is estimated that at least 57,500 Chinese POWs were killed.

At 6:31 a.m. Robert Capa landed in the first wave on Omaha Beach. He captured 'bloody Omaha' in what turned out to be a world famous photo sequence.
Capa described the morning, "After the pre-invasion breakfast at 3 am with hot cakes, sausages, eggs and coffee, served on the invasion ship by white-coated waiters, at 4 am the invasion barges were lowered down into the rough sea. The men from my barge waded in the water. I paused for a moment on the gangplank to take my first real picture of the invasion. The boatswain who was in a hurry to get the hell out of there, mistook my picture-taking attitude for explicable hesitation, and helped me make up my mind with a well-aimed kick in the rear. The water was cold and the beach still more than a hundred yards away. The bullets tore holes in the water around me and I made for the nearest steel obstacle." His three rolls of film were rushed to London for processing. There a darkroom technician, eager for glimpses of the landing, dried the film too fast. The excessive heat melted the emulsion and ruined all but 10 frames. The soldier in the picture has been identified as Huston Sears Riley.

And a shell casing kicked out and landed on his forearm, resting there. The next one in rapid succession, flew farther back and hit me in my forehead, as I was standing behind him, to the side. Expelling is very hard to do by a decentralized force, and then even if you succeed you can be left with a problem like the Israelis, where your enemies are penned in to breed on your doorstep. Every child of one you expel is your enemy. Every line you exterminate will never trouble you again.

Is it really that hard to round them up and kick them out? The Israelis never finished that because the UN looked at them funny & they thought they won though. Everyone you exterminate might invoke their clam joining to fuck with you too.

There is a reason in the old testament of the bible it says to wipe out every man woman and child in the cities conquered by the tribes of israel. Total annihilation wipes out the resistance, there is no middle ground. No pissed off teenager looking to cause trouble will ever forget that you killed his dad/older brothers or made the family leave their home. Violence is a cycle, the only sure way to break it is to destroy one of the vengeful sides.
