If you read "87 percent of blacks identify themselves as belonging to a religion", then the only information that tells you is that a certain number of blacks identify themselves as belonging to a religion. If you took that to mean that 87 percent actually follow a religion, then that is not supported by the actual data.

It's also important to constantly ask questions about the data. Who specifically was being surveyed? (I wasn't.) Was the survey's extrapolation to the entire population statistically valid? That said, I think those stats are probably about right, but for future reference: Stats rarely/never just give a simple answer to a question, and you need to analyze such data thoughtfully.
