Is running with a pack back filled with weights a good idea? Can I possibly hurt my self doing this?

Ask any military personel. My cousin who was a ranger in Afghanistan before he was KIA, told me he carried over 100 pounds of gear depending on mission. All infantry carry a good amount, I think usually is 60-70 pounds. Don't quote me on that one, but there's nothing incredibly dangerous about it unless you have weak shoulders or back. They've been doing it for centuries.

I think military people's backpacks are rigid framed and direct some of the load onto the waist with a strap of some kind.

If you wear a superheavy school backpack, i think you'll end up hunched over. If you manage to solve the posture problem, then running with weights will basically workout your calves. Over time (years, dont worry) you might wear down your knees from so much extra weight on them. This is why people with bad knees don't like to run downhill, because it greatly increases the weight on the knees on every step.

Try ankle weights and hand weights, that way your arm/leg muscles will be working to stabilize the extra weight as you move your body around.

Running with ankle or wrist weights is a bad idea, particularly wrist weights. You risk hyperextending your joints and the damage adds up. There was a thread on this not too long ago.

Military backpacks are specifically designed to minimize stress on the body and distribute weight loads as evenly as possible. If you run with a weighted backpack that isn't specially designed for carrying heavy weights over long distances, you'll most likely do yourself an injury. Especially since the running motion will be throwing the backpack up and down; it'd be extremely stressful on the shoulders, back and neck.

Maybe running with 10lbs weights might do something.

load up a backpack with as much weight as possible. carry it on your front instead of on your back. now get another backpack and load it up with a lot of weight, but less this time. carry the second on your back. try running as far from your home as possible until you get tired. remove the weights and leave them. now run back home.

just do lunges with weights. i did them with 45lb dumbells, and my legs were sore for 3 days. i was just able to start doing them again today.

as for stamina, just sprint. but building leg muscles, and becoming faster do lunges.
