View Full Version : What does my cat want?

So cats are pretty weird, no doubt about it. Usually I just let my cat go about his usual weird business, but this has been pissing everyone off. My cat is an indoor/outdoor cat. He sleeps and eats inside and roams around outside when he wants. He poops outside mostly, but he does have a litter box.
Usually he sits at the door and meows. So we let him out. A couple hours later he'll be outside the living room or kitchen window meowing for us to let him back in.
But as of the past couple of months he's been going to the door and meowing to get out, going around the house to the other door, meowing to get in, sit and looking at us for a few seconds and meowing to get back out. What the fuck does he want. He has food and water, I give him treats pretty often, play with him when he looks interested and pet him when he lets us.
Is this just a game or is there something I'm doing wrong here? It's seriously a piss off when you're watching a movie or something and you've got to get up literally every five minutes to let the cat in or out. And if you don't, he sits and meows forever and doesn't give in. What the fuck is his problem. Thanks.

Install a cat door.
lol, sorry i couldn't stop laughing. I am not a cat person nor a dog person but i do prefer other animals like rabbits. Your cat is retarded in a way. I can't think of any good reason for him to do that other then he loves to annoy you or he wants to get laid. In any case you shouldn't let him in for a while see if it stops him from doing the meow meow charm.
Who knows it might work and it's an animal which means if u didn't put a stop to it. It might become a habit for him which will reduce any chances of you getting a break from this mess.
Increase the TV volume 20 ~ 30mins outside wont hurt him.

He wants to assert his dominance. You are officially his bitch
I don't know WHY your cat's doing it, but my cat did the same thing and this is how I fixed it;
When I let him out the back door, he'd run to the front just like you said and meow to get back in. So one day I was sick of it, and I just walked out the door with him, followed him around to the front, let him back in, and we walked in a circle twice before he just ran off and laid down.
He didn't do it after... I don't know why he was doing it or why he stopped, but it might be worth a go. Doesn't take more than a minute, so even if it doesn't work it's not as though you spent a lot of time or money.
Maybe cats can develop OCD about unneccessary routines/rituals like people can? They probably can.

Hahah, cats so fucking weird. I'll certainly give it a try tomorrow, I can picture it going on for quite awhile though. There's five people in my family and there's usually someone at one of the doors/windows right away to let him in so during certain hours of the day (like lunch time when everyone is either in the living room or kitchen where the doors are), he's constantly going in and out and everyone is saying to each other "Did he just come in? I just let him out, wtf".
And to Dfg, he's part Siamese (super loud mouthy cats) so even if he's outside the window you seriously can't ignore it. If I go to a different room he follows me to that window.
Fuckin cats man. :hrmph:

That's actually a really interesting theory. Cats are already really meticulous about certain things like cleaning. Hmm. Something to think about.

My cat used to do the same thing, we just started ignoring it, true it does get annoying with the constant meowing but it's really just a matter of who gives in first.
Eventually it stopped and went back to the old ways.
Tip: it's easier to ignore the cat when it's out, so if you just let it out of the house and then it asks to get in right after just go around your daily business without aknowledging it.

Cats are quite territorial, and like to keep tabs on the shit in their environment. A suburban cat will explore the entire house, and the whole garden, EVERY DAY, for new/out of place things. They do this as a habit.
I'd say the cat in the OP is merely trying to go about this routine and is unable to due to the closed door.
Open a window or install a cat door. /problem.

My old cat used to do this with my bedroom door, he's sit on my computer and reach out and claw the door knob and scream his little face off until I opened the door.I don't like my door open so I'd shut it and 10 seconds later he'd whine to get back in. I just turned my music up and let him whine and he eventually learned being a vocal indecisive douche bag wasn't worth it and he cut that shit out.

My cat did this shit all the time. I always figured he was just old and senile, and ignored him for an hour or so til I felt like letting him in. He died a couple months after he started doing this from some crazy cancer in his mouth/throat, so I never really found out why he did that and how to stop it.

This could actually be pretty close. I had a cat once who would not leave any closed door in the house alone. He just stood in front of it yelling until it was at least cracked enough that he could tell that he could get in if he actually wanted to. It didn't really matter to us whether most of the internal doors in the house were open, so we just kept them that way for the most part.
Of course, with your cat coming to the external doors over and over, that's a little different. Maybe you should try installing a cat-door. Or installing a new cat.

To be honest, I suspect it's either this or the aforementioned dominance thing. Just ignore the little prat when you put it out, make a rule something like "If I'm going to put you out, it will be at least 20 minutes until I let you back in."
It might be annoying for a while but the conditioning will pay off.

The problem with this is that in the winter I feel like shit leaving him out. 20 min probably isn't doing him any harm, but still, if I found him frozen to something I'd feel like shit.
As far as installing a cat door, we have retarded dog so that wouldn't work. He'd either manage to get out, get stuck in the door, or chew the cat door off in frustration because he can't fit through. But we have these half window things that could work for the cat if we took the screen out.
Another fun habit he's just developed is meowing at the door to get out, so I ignore him for awhile. Finally I get pissed and open the door, he stands there for awhile, looks at me, turns around and decides he doesn't want out any more.
I suppose giving him his own way out is the only way to go.

This. It doesn't take cat's long to explore their territory and their scent marks need to be constantly re applied. The inside of the house is the center of the territory and since they are blocked inside or outside they don't have access to their complete territory so they meow constantly to be let in and out. My cat does the same thing, it's really annoying.
