Alright so my computer is running on the lower end of the quality continuum lately and I need some stimulation. I've been playing SC4 but gotten bored, played some Soldat but many people cheat/only zombie levels are played. I'm looking for some solid games to play that won't overrun my PC. Gotten mildly bored of FPS, but love action games none-the-less. Toss out some of your favorites.

I have a Dell Dimension 2400, from like 2003 or earlier as my main comp. 32mb integrated graphics card, 256mb pc-2700 ram. Yeah, weak.

PC: Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic on low-med settings, Diablo II, Age Of Empires II

N64 roms (Paper Mario, Pokemon Stadium 2, Super Smash Brothers).

Playstation roms like Dragon Quest 7, Monster Rancher, Treasures of the Deep (fucking awesome game).

SNES roms, like Secret of Mana, Chrono Trigger, Earthbound, Final Fantasy III.

Dead Frontier, it's like a 2-D top view Left4Dead with RPG elements, I was a level 47 Student but gave all my stuff away (I was Emblem for anyone else who played).

Dofus is an alright MMORPG, kind of cartoony but always tons of people on.

I'm also looking for more games.

ADOM (ancient domains of mystery)

MUDs (multi user dungeons)

Zork can kill a few hours.

Starcraft

Yahoo Games

Console emulators: zSNES, Project64, etc.

Play classic games. Work your way from the 80s, and play influential games all the way up to recent times. Doom, sim city, dune, myst. that sort of thing.

Totally behind this idea as well.

There are a lot of MMOs that might run for you. Fiesta online, Mabinogi, Maple story, Ragnarok online, Perfect world, Shin Megami Tensei: Imagine, ect.. Most of the companies that release games have several others, so checking around the main site can get you other things to try. My computer is an old Sony Vaio desktop with relatively low specs, so those may run for you as well. If your specs are just below that of the games minimum requirements, they'll sometimes run anyway, so its worth a try.

For just regular computer games, you could try the Myst series (especially Riven), and for emus and roms you could check here http://www.romulation.net/ and other sites, and just look through the lists. Right off the top id recommend Klonoa: Door to phanomile (PS), Snatcher (Sega CD), Sonic series (genesis), Gradius series and G-Darius (shumps).

hope this helps some. Good luck.

Check out the System Shock 2 thread. It's an awesome game that'll run on just about any computer. :)

I also always recommend Arcanum: of Steamworks and Magick Obscura. It's one of my favorite rpgs.

Great suggestions, definitely thinking about following up from the 80's. Mind you, my computer isn't that bad. 3.2ghz, 1gig ram, geforce 6800 ultra, audigy ZX2 sound card nothing serious but enough to run some alright shit.

I tell ya, kids these days... Wouldnt know a slow computer if displayed it right on the screen, "SLOW COMPUTER". Back in my day we had to make do with 386s! And Apple ][es! In monochrome!

you should give soldat another chance. Most people play on the Capture the flag setting. Also there is a huge collection of players on irc.

I had an old McIntosh Performa 405 or something. I remember I would go on blackberry games on AOL, load up a game, check on it after dinner, wake up and check on it, and by the time I got home from school, it'd be loaded! I think I topped off at 24bytes/minute. 1998 ftl

Also: Tonight my buddies computer took a crap, so I told him I'd take a look at it. It boots to a screwy bios screen with a duck as the cursor. I let him know it's pretty boned so he let me have it. I just put a 512 stick of pc-2700 to help my other stick of 256mb. Helps tons so far.

Civilization III is a fantastic game that doesn't require a fantastic system to play. Endless replay value.

Hell, what about low-space requirement games? I have low bandwidth and need to download games at my library (10mb/s). I've played System Shock 2, now I'm thinking of something along the lines of civilization 3 or... Damn, I just dunno. Old RPG's/FPS maybe. Fallout and Deus Ex is outa the question, did them years ago, now I'm looking for something I might have missed and is awesome to play.

All these games can be had for free if you do a quick search:

Starsiege
Tribes
Tribes 2
Machines

Other than that, you can never go wrong with TIE Fighter, Dark Forces II, or Jedi Academy. I don't know where to get these games for free, but you should be able to find all of them cheaply.

If you want to know where to find any of the first four mentioned games for free, let me know.

Turn some of the settings down if you need to, but it will still look good. If you can get into it and resist using cheats, you'll have a blast with this game.
