The first sandwich is attributed to the ancient Jewish sage Hillel the Elder, who is said to have wrapped meat from the Paschal lamb and bitter herbs in a matzo (or flat, unleavened bread) during Passover.

During the Middle Ages, thick slabs of coarse and usually stale bread, called "trenchers", were used as plates. After a meal, the food-soaked trencher was fed to a dog or to beggars, or eaten by the diner. Trenchers were as much the harbingers of open-face sandwiches as they were of disposable dishware. The immediate cultural precursor with a direct connection to the English sandwich was to be found in seventeenth-century Holland, where the naturalist John Ray observed that in the taverns beef hung from the rafters "which they cut into thin slices and eat with bread and butter laying the slices upon the butter"— explanatory specifications that reveal the Dutch belegde broodje was as yet unfamiliar in England.

The first written usage of the English word appeared in Edward Gibbon's journal, in longhand, referring to "bits of cold meat" as a 'Sandwich'. It was named after John Montagu, 4th Earl of Sandwich, an 18th-century English aristocrat, although he was neither the inventor nor sustainer of the food. It is said that Lord Sandwich was fond of this form of food because it allowed him to continue playing cards, particularly cribbage, while eating without getting his cards greasy from eating meat with his bare hands.

If it was initially perceived as a food men shared while gaming and drinking at night, the sandwich slowly began appearing in polite society as a late-night meal among the aristocracy. The sandwich's popularity in Spain and England increased dramatically during the 19th century, when the rise of an industrial society and the working classes made fast, portable, and inexpensive meals essential.

It was at the same time that the sandwich finally began to appear outside of Europe. In the United States, the sandwich was first promoted as an elaborate meal at supper. By the early 20th century, as bread became a staple of the American diet, the sandwich became the same kind of popular, quick meal as was widespread in the Mediterranean.

Landing us to the present time. Where sandwiches are known an loved by all. Eaten as standard lunch fare around the globe. Served up at half a million specialty shops. Nothing is more universal than mans love for sandwich. But what makes a perfect sandwich. That is the the real question.

Personally i submit the chicken club sandwich as the perfect specimen. Exhibiting a spectacular meat to bread ratio the club seems beautiful from every angle. Containing bacon, chicken, lettuce, tomato, onions, mayo, an ham i would be hard pressed to think of a single sandwich that lives up to the name "Sammich" quite as well as the club.

so zoklet, what do you think?

What makes the perfect sandwich?
Time
Passion
and love

my friend
Like any other art it takes time and practice.
But it is possible to make the best sandwiches.
:)

My personal favourites are my red atlantic salmon and mayonnaise sandwich on crisp hovis bread or my dads recipe chicken sandwich on normal soft white kingsmill
:)

God I love sandwiches.

For me, nothing is better then a classic ham and swiss.
Plain white bread
Mayo
Mustard
Ham
Dill Pickles
Swiss cheese
Lettuce

FUCK YES

MAyo AND MUSTARD!

I always go by the ONE rule.
It goes in if its in ones.

Ie
One meat (fish is exluded)
One sauce or condiment.
ONe type of vegetable (not going into detail)
etc

Otherwise your just confusing your flavours.
Like making the best burger everrrr then smothering it with ketchup.

:(

Sandwiches are in my top list of fave things.

yayyy

God im soo sad :(
I blame it on being ill

Mayo and mustard go well together though, creamy and tangy.

When it comes to sandwiches though, I just try to pile on as much as the bread will hold.

No women
i shall change your ways if it kills me.

If you want tangy AND creamy go for a condiment like salad cream.
Your mixing too many flavours.
Overloading your palat.

Its hard to explain without actually making you a sandwich.

Ok its like anything.
Like a well crafted shotgun.
A finely distilled whiskey.
A well cured tobacco.
A crisp aftershave

They are all elegant and simple but sooo pleasurable.
If you put the money and time into singular quality ingrediants and don't overcomplicate what is already the best then you'll find yourself enjoying a higher quality sandwich.

Well if we're talking quality ingredients here, then I'll put more effort into making the flavors work.

But when I think of a sandwich, I think of needing a snack at three in the morning and loading pre-packaged ham and cheese slices onto Wonderbread. Comfort food.

Yeah but my 3 in the mornin snack consists of exactly as i explained.
DO it right or don't do it at all.
:)

And when you go shopping etc put aside a bit of cash for some more quality items.
:)
It pays off.

when it comes to sammich time, i think the more the merrier. seriously when i make a sammich i want it to be epic. think along the lines of dagwood. any veg, any meat, any chips, any cheese in my fridge better watch out when it comes to sandwich time. cause i use thick hearty home baked home sliced bread, an that shit can hold a lot of filling.

and dont even get me started on the sauces. i love to mix an match. currently i am digging thousand island dressing on one half and horseradish sauce on the other. shit is amazing.

now this is not to say that a plain simple sandwich is not a good sandwich. all i am saying is that a plain simple sandwich is just that. plain an simple. personally i want my sandwich to have a bit of character.

Also, peanut butter and bologna, try it.

so i just tried this out. and you know what? it is pretty fucking good. everyone should try this combo.this got me thinking, what other strange combos are out there?

some of my favorite weird sandwich creations include grilled cheese with grape jelly an peanut butter with mayo. both simple. both odd. both surprisingly tasty.

Mayo on the bottom slice, Ham then cheddar then ham then pepper jack then a slight covering of lettuce and onion then I cover that bitch in pepper. Full sammitch, none of that wussy removing the crust and cut it and half bullshit.

It has to be made in this order, making it in reverse order and flipping it doesn't work either, it's like it's self aware.

Kaiser roll (toasted) ( with or without poppy seeds) light mayo, thousand island dressing, cheddar cheese, prosciutto ham, roast beef, sliced cucumber and lettuce. I do believe it is the food of the near gods.
