Bupropion (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bupropion), an atypical anti-depressant, is only marketed/prescribed here as a smoking-cessation device. To quote Medsafe (http://www.medsafe.govt.nz/Profs/PUarticles/zyban.htm)
Bupropion (Zyban™), originally developed as an antidepressant, has recently been identified as a beneficial aid in smoking cessation therapy. In mid 2000, it was introduced in New Zealand for this latter indication.
Now, call me scepitcal, but I fail to believe that the Department of Health knows something that scores of other western countries that allow Bupropion to be perscribed as an antidepressant, do not.
In short, I want my hands on this.
What's my best bet?
1. Fake a smoking addiction?
I have no idea if they "test" for it or whatever. I have bum-puffed about three cigarettes in my life, so if they look for evidence it's likely to be lacking...
2. Find a sympathetic doctor?
Most, in my experience, seem to feel threatened and defensive when patients do their own research. I mentioned it to one doctor and after a quick google search () triumphantly declared it was only a pill for smokers, and told me I had my head in the clouds.
Any suggestions or thoughts would be welcome (this may go better in the drug forum, I don't know..)
